From fracture to stage: My behind-the-scenes audition with the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra

Sometimes life tests you in the strangest ways. Just a few months ago, I was dealing with recovering from a broken left foot, a limitation that is a major blow to any musician's morale, but in my case, it ended up being the prelude to something that I still find difficult to fully process.

A veces la vida te pone a prueba de las formas más extrañas. Hace apenas unos meses estaba lidiando con la recuperación de una fractura en mi pie izquierdo, una limitación que para cualquier músico es un golpe anímico fuerte, pero que en mi caso, terminó siendo el preámbulo de algo que todavía me cuesta procesar del todo.

September arrived with an immense workload. As usual, we wrapped up the intensive cello course that I organize every year here in San Felipe. It was a case of leaving behind that logistical and pedagogical intensity only to dive headfirst into the biggest challenge I have faced so far: the audition for the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra.

Septiembre llegó con una carga de trabajo inmensa. Como ya es costumbre, cerramos el curso intensivo de violoncello que organizo anualmente aquí en San Felipe. Fue salir de esa intensidad logística y pedagógica para caer de lleno en el reto más grande que he enfrentado hasta ahora: la audición para la Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela.

I had very few weeks left. Time was slipping through my fingers because I had resumed all my activities at once after my injury. I had to study against the clock, with a tired body but a focused mind. At this point, the support of my girlfriend was essential, and that of my now partner Oriana was key; her help was the extra boost I needed when I felt that I wouldn't have enough time to polish each piece, my teacher, and my family.

Tenía muy pocas semanas. El tiempo se me escapaba entre las manos porque ya había retomado todas mis actividades de golpe tras la lesión. Fue estudiar a contrarreloj, con el cuerpo cansado pero la mente enfocada. En este punto, el apoyo de mi novia fue fundamental y de mi ahora compañera Oriana fue clave; su ayuda fue ese impulso extra que necesitaba cuando sentía que el tiempo no me iba a alcanzar para pulir cada obra, a mi maestro y mi familia.

It was my first professional audition, and it took place in a setting that commands absolute respect: behind the scenes. It's a strange feeling knowing that the jury doesn't know who you are, can't see your posture or your gestures; you only exist through what comes out of your instrument. Performing each piece in that isolation forces you to be completely honest, both technically and emotionally. It was just me and my cello in front of an invisible jury.

Fue mi primera audición profesional y bajo un formato que impone un respeto absoluto: tras bambalinas. Es una sensación particular saber que el jurado no sabe quién eres, no ve tu postura ni tus gestos; solo existes a través de lo que sale de tu instrumento. Interpretar cada obra en ese aislamiento te obliga a una honestidad técnica y emocional total. Solo éramos mi cello y yo frente a un jurado invisible.

Today I feel incredibly happy. Not only because of the technical achievement, but also because of what the institution I am joining means. The Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra is the oldest in the country and a National Heritage Site. This year, 2026, marks its 96th anniversary since maestro Vicente Emilio Sojo founded it in 1930. Being part of the "Society," of that tradition that has shaped music in Venezuela, is a level that I always saw as high and that today is my reality.

Hoy me siento increíblemente feliz. No solo por el logro técnico, sino por lo que significa la institución a la que entro. La Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela es la más antigua del país y Patrimonio de la Nación. Este año 2026 está cumpliendo 96 años de historia desde que el maestro Vicente Emilio Sojo la fundara en 1930. Ser parte de la "Sociedad", de esa tradición que ha moldeado la música en Venezuela, es un nivel que siempre vi alto y que hoy es mi realidad.

This has meant moving, meeting new people, and starting to write another chapter in my life that I didn't expect to happen this way. After so much effort, studying under pressure and healing a broken bone, being here feels like a fair reward. I continue to have experiences, I continue to learn, and, above all, I continue to play.

Esto ha significado mudarme, conocer gente nueva y empezar a escribir otro capítulo de mi vida que no esperaba que sucediera así. Después de tanto esfuerzo, de estudiar con la presión del reloj y de sanar un hueso roto, estar aquí se siente como una recompensa justa. Sigo viviendo experiencias, sigo aprendiendo y, sobre todo, sigo tocando.
