Ding ang bato..... Darna!

So this line is from the famous Pinoy superhero, 'Darna.' To transform from an ordinary woman into a superhero, she swallows a magical stone and shouts 'Darna!'hence the famous catchphrase, 'Ding, ang bato!' ('Ding, the stone!'). Ding is her sidekick, btw, a little boy who solely knows her secret.

Hello friends, it's Tuesday again! And yes, you've heard that right, I will be sharing some Pinoy Rock music from my country for this week's #ThreetuneTuesday #ttt Before we dive in, let's give @ablaze a big thanks for keeping this cool weekly event going.

I love having the opportunity to share some of our amazing, underrated local rock music with all of you!

Let's start!

The song 'Narda' is dedicated to our national hero, Darna—just kidding! Darna is actually a fictional superhero from our country. While a lot of people might say she's a Wonder Woman copycat, I beg to disagree. Narda is just an ordinary woman gifted with a stone that she uses to transform into Darna, a superhero who helps people, saves lives, and fights off the bad guys... corrupt officials, perhaps?

QuoteWhile Darna is frequently referred to as the "Filipino Wonder Woman" by international pop culture observers, her costume holds local significance. Her helmet, for example, is heavily inspired by the insignia of the Philippine Air Force, featuring winged medallions. - Wikipedia- Darna

Lakas Tama- Siakol

Siakol.jpg

Siakol

'Lakas Tama' is a song about a guy's intense romantic infatuation.

Although Siakol gained fame and left a lasting mark on Filipino culture by introducing alternative rock and the 'tunog kanto' (street sound) writing about the hardcore Pinoy way of living, the stage eventually grew smaller as other bands entered the mainstream. They are such underrated, good Pinoy rock music. They actually came from my hometown, Parañaque City in Manila.

I’ve been a fan since primary school, having grown up hearing them on my cousin's jams. Back in the day, people would label you as 'praning' for listening to rock or metal music, in contrast to the traditional, demure, soft, and very feminine 'dalagang Filipina.' While it translates to 'paranoid' in English, the slang meaning in our language is simply being mischievous or defying conservative norms. like i care about their opinions or their taste in music! Besides, I am still a dalagang Filipina lol. I speak softly and I love pink. Damn, I love pink! 😅 Pardon the profanity, but maybe I'm just a good combination of praning and dalagang Filipina?

I don't consider listening to rock music wild. My family made a safe space for us to speak up (tho still in a respectful manner). Discipline is also hardcore in our house; for example, you are not allowed to slam the door no matter how angry you are, otherwise you will become the door the very next day, dead, You're just so dead! 😅 I remember telling that to my student when I witnessed her slamming her door.

And then there's the 'makuha ka sa tingin' the notorious Asian mom's death stare when she sees you're about to mess up for real, lol. Gee, up to this day, I'm still scared of those! 🤣 Seriously, we were taught maximum tolerance, lol. So tell me, what is your definition of 'wild/ praning'?

Crazy For You- Michael Cruz

Michael Cruz.jpg

Michael Cruz

Let's cool down and end this post with a slow rock version of Madonna's '80s hit. It's a rendition by Michael Cruz, another underrated rock singer from my country. I mean, just listen to how he replaces the soft synthesizers with an electric guitar, turning the song from a pop ballad into slow, alternative rock! How cool is that?

And there you have it! Thanks for listening. I'm honored to share the songs we used to jam out to in our backyards, school grounds, and local bars. Hope you enjoyed them.

Let's hang out! Share your favorite tracks below. I'd love to listen to them too.

What a fantastic post and the cute wee educator is educating us!

I had heard of your superhero Dama before but this was a great tiein...

Now the first song around the 30 second mark gave me vibes from I could be Happy by the wonderful Claire Grogan and Altered Iamges.

I have listened to Siakol before and love them. Some serious tunes you have here Ellie!

The third one. Michael Cruz has a good voice, but I would rather listen to a female singing stuff like that. It was good in so far as not just a cover but he made his own and not Madonna's!

Was listening to all the TTT playlists when I went online earlier this afternoon, and now this song is stuck in my head, LSS for real, lol. I’m definitely playing this to my students as a celebratory song on July 3rd! 😁✌🏻 Thanks for dropping by, Ed.

Nice Pinoy tunes! Thanks for sharing them. I hadn't ever heard any before so that was fun!

That Asian mother death stare doesn't look like a lot of fun, I'll pass on that experience. Although it is similar to Latina mom's will do, that I have experienced, not fun! lol

Great job on your TTT! Have a tip!

Hey Ryan! Belated Happy Father's Day. A lot has been going on in my mind lately, i read your blog about the gold and BBQ, mentally replied, and then eventually forgot to actually put it into words. Lol. 😅

The songs I chose today might be difficult to understand because of the Tagalog lyrics, how mindless of me not to include the English translations! But I'm glad you enjoyed the vibe anyway. Thanks for dropping by. 💕

Hahahahah, Fyi. She's here. The obsession is cringey. I think one monitor caught her, she thinks this is a nice place to mess.
