Three Tune Tuesday: songs that got me started playing guitar
Hi Hiveans
This is my first Three Tune Tuesday , thanks to @ablaze for giving the start to this interesting format that I see is engaging so many people š
I wanna start this weekly appointment by talking about three songs that contributed to giving me an interest in playing guitar and consequently giving rise to my entire musical career.
I began to be interested in rock when I was 14 thanks to two situations:
- attending a gym where the daily soundtrack included AC/DC and Guns n Roses;
- my father introducing me and my brother to bands like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Sweet.
Add the fact that at the time MTV allowed itself to air videos of bands like The Darkness and you're done. A passion was born in me. It expanded and became more and more sophisticated, it became an integral part of my being and created a fire inside me that continues to burn with the same intensity even after many years.
Highway Star by Deep Purple
This is probably one of Deep Purple's most popular songs after Smoke on the water. A fundamental piece of hard rock, which talks about speed, car racing and how cool and unstoppable you feel speeding down the highway without limits.
Those who are not used to Deep Purple's style will perhaps be surprised to find a very long instrumental section due to the presence of the two solos -- the first organ and the second guitar -- which often seem to fight with each other in their songs, creating the signature style of the English band.
I remember the first time I heard this solo. I thought "how is this possible? He must have 6 hands to play this stuff!" š
I had never picked up a guitar yet and I didn't know. Actually Ritchie Blackmore's solo isn't technically that difficult, it's just a bit fast š
But it was precisely after listening to that solo that I decided to learn to play. I wanted to be able to play the Highway Star solo one day too. You can listen to it at minute 3:45 of the video above.
Mama Kin by Aerosmith
Certainly not a well-known Aerosmith song. I discovered it thanks to the Guitar Hero videogame. But I have to say that I'm a Aerosmith super fan and I know many songs that are unknown to the general public. It was easier to discover these pearls in a past time when we were buying albums...
Mama kin is featured in the band's first self-titled album, the one that contains the much more famous Dream On so to speak. I'm including it in this list because -- as a huge fan -- I couldn't wait to learn one of their songs. With my first band when I was 18, we discovered that Guns N Roses had also featured it in their first lives and so we also included it in our setlist.
The song is about a young boy who meets a young gypsy girl, he is fascinated by her and wants to know everything about her and how she lives her life, the places she has been.
Listening to these early Aerosmith works now, I understand why they were criticized at the time for sounding too much like the Rolling Stones š
I Believe In a Thing Called Love by The Darkness
Let's fast forward 30 years. It's 2003 and the video for this song officially enters rotation on MTV and I am struck by it. Probably one of the best debuts in the rock genre of the 2000s, The Darkness exploded in all their power, giving one last burst of rock in the world charts before this genre was abandoned in favor of hip hop (sigh).
Largely inspired by Queen and Led Zeppelin, The Darkness collect the legacy of these sacred monsters and release 10 songs with a more modern, powerful, impeccable sound. A true gem that sets the bar very high for their career -- and which will unfortunately also cause all the problems they'll run into later.
This is the song everyone recognizes the band with. A hymn to love which, instead of being a mushy ballad, decides to scream with all the strength of a Marshall amplifier cranked up to 11! š„š„š„
I have devoured this album dozens and dozens of times every day and I never get tired of it. To this day, this is one of the songs I enjoy playing the most.
Let me know in the comments if you already know these songs and bands. What do you think? Are there any other songs by these bands that you like? Lets keep going!
Thanks for your attention and see you next Tuesday š¤
Deep Purple one of the bands we grew up with always awesome to hear, Aerosmith made a big name for themselves in the day.
Never heard The Darkness but can well believe influenced by Queen and/or Led Zeppelin !LOLZ
Thanks for the music.
