Three Tune Tuesday - Discovering the dark electronic genre

Hi Invisibles of the night!

In this episode of Three Tune Tuesday -- a format originally brought to us by @ablaze -- I want to introduce you a little more into my music world.

I started listening to darkwave music just a couple years ago. Then I dove deeper into electronic and I got passionate so much about it that I decided to bring my music career into the dark electronic genre.

Probably the most famous band you can associate to this side of music is Depeche Mode. I never listened to them so much, because through Spotify playlists I discovered so many newer bands from which I get inspired for my music. So I want to talk about three songs that represent my starting point in listening to this genre.

Blutengel - You walk away

Blutengel ("Blood Angel") is a German electronic music group formed by singer Chris Pohl.
The lyrics are written primarily in German and English and are presented with male and female vocals. The themes of the songs usually centre around themes common in Gothic fiction such as love, vampirism, sexual fetishism, death and immortality.

You walk away is the second single from their 8th album Monument and it's the perfect example of Blutengel style, made of orchestrations well blended with a danceable four on the floor beat and a full electronic synth base. A sound that works so well on the gothic clubs dancefloors.

The song talks about making mistakes and wanting to go back in time to erase them. But you can't, so you must keep them in your memory and still go on with your life, despite the regrets.

What I love about Blutengel is their capability to create complex arrangements while maintaining a catchy production. They're able to put so many ideas together in one single song and every sound fits perfectly inside the mix and create a full wall of sound that I still find hard to replicate as a producer.

She past away - Durdu Dunya

She Past Away are a pretty big name in the darkwave scene worldwide. They formed in Turkey in 2006 and they're style in highly influenced by post-punk with a darker twist, where guitar parts are accompanied by synth compositions with a retro taste.

I think they are an example of how much the gothic community is bonded around the world just by the strength of good music. It doesn't care where you come from and what language you speak. As much as the music is good and lets you free your inner self in a liberating dance, surrounded by other people that there, on the dancefloor, are exactly like you... that's the power of music.

I felt the same at my first goth nights and wanted to be an active part of it, by making my own music to make people dance 😊

Dark - Nyctophilia

Dark is a smaller act than the previous ones, but I include him in this post because it's been one of the first projects I've listened in my journey into the dark side and a big inspiration for the synth sounds that I wanted to obtain for my music.

It's a German solo project with a specific sound that I still have a hard time finding in other artists. It's full electronic and combines the classic darkwave feeling with big synths that are more aggressive than usual. I like its ability to remain solidly into the goth side and not fall into EBM.

I've always used Nyctophilia as comparison for creating big, strong and aggressive synths and I appreciate the way he's able to create this full sound with just a drum machine and a couple of synths (and a ton of reverb 😛).

Plus, he always find some really beautiful goth models for his videos and live performances 🖤

And that's all for today. As I think we can give more space to this alternative genres here on Hive I'm going to start a format to talk specifically about this kind of music. The bands that I follow and that inspire me, live events that I've attended, and so on.

If you are curious about this, follow me and probably the next week I'll post something. Then I want to see if someone will contribute to this new space.

Thanks for your attention and always

Woww... I just took my time to listen to each of the songs and I'm glad I did. Dark tunes have their moments and each of these feels like songs I will definitely vibe to when I'm pumped. Haha. They are awesome.

You did a good job sharing these.

I grew up when you had to seek out late-night radio shows that played metal or indie stuff before the internet took off. Every genre can find an audience now around the world.
