Single songs I like from bands I don't care
It's been a while since my last #ttt or #threetunetuesday post, an interesting and challenging format by @ablaze to talk about three songs, possibly linked together by some kind of theme. There was a time when I was programming this format. Then other things happened, I found other things to write about but today I just had a hint and so here I am. Three songs that I like, made by bands that I don't give a shit about ahaha
THE DANDY WHAROLS - BOHEMIAN LIKE YOU
My god I love this song so much. I never get tired to this. It's obviously their major success, a song that most people know but don't even know the name of the band. Amazing video, I remember watching this broadcasted on alternative music channels on TV and wondering how they managed to show actual naked people. Proof of an art piece, I guess?
The only other song I know from them is "We used to be friends", mostly known by those who watched Veronica Mars show back in the day.
I tried to listen to the album where this song is in once, but they never really retained my attention enough.
SUPERGRASS - MARY
Can you believe this is the same band that made that silly annoying song called "Alright"? Yep, that one that goes
We are young, we run green
Keep our teeth nice and clean
See our friends, see the sights
And feel alright
Oof, this kind of silly must-be-happy things always annoyed me since I was young. On contrary I always felt fascinated by the darker side of things. I'm not a fan of horror and creepy really, just the darker tones of things and when something has not a single trace of shadow, it's just boring for me.
I remember when I saw this video for the first time it really hit me! I was totally glued to the screen and I wanted to watch it again and again... but was TV, not youtube. Very interesting song. Mysterious and mystique, melancholic, groovy and very 70s sounding. It gives me chills and makes me chill at the same time, you know what I mean? I don't think I know another song that manage to have the same exact effect on my persona as this one.
Apart from this, never listened to anything else from Supergrass.
PRINCE - KISS
Ok let me drop this bomb right here. I (think I) don't like Prince.
This is the first song I heard from him when I was a teenager and I love it. Everything in this song sounds perfect to me. It's minimal but it's groovy. A real simple funky song. Prince falsetto is amazing and unique. The chorus is super catchy and both guitar solos are perfect for the song and totally unexpected.
Said this, I haven't listen much from Prince other than this song and here's the reason. His most famous songs, if I recall right, are Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. Well this last one I can't even remember how it is. And Purple Rain... for me is just boring. It's just a long and repetitive song with nothing really standing out. Everybody talks about the amazing and superb guitar solo in Purple Rain... meh. It doesn't give me any feeling, sorry 😅
There are plenty of amazing rock ballads from the 70s and 80s and Purple Rain wouldn't event get into my top 30.
So that's why I never tried to listen again to Prince.
But everytime Kiss is played on the radio I go crazy ✌️
