A live music experience: Alcest

Finalmente ho avuto la possibilità di andare a vedere dal vivo una delle mie band preferite. Gli Alcest fanno un genere definito "blackgaze" perché mescolano sonorità tipiche del black metal come scream, blastbeat di batteria e tremolo picking con le chitarre, ma inseriti in un soundscape shoegaze, che comporta ritmi rallentati, tanto riverbero e melodie sognanti.

Il concerto si è tenuto all'Alcatraz di Milano, un locale che è il punto di riferimento numero 1 per i grossi concerti live in Italia. Mio fratello mi ha regalato il biglietto per il mio compleanno e abbiamo intrapreso il viaggio insieme in treno.
Scopriamo che il concerto è stato anticipato di un'ora (incredibile!) e l'apertura porte è indicata per le 18.00. Visto che non ci era mai capitato di andare ad un concerto a Milano di sabato sera, abbiamo deciso di guardarci intorno e trovare un evento a cui partecipare in seconda serata, ma ne parlo più tardi.

Siamo arrivati a Milano alle 15. Piccola deviazione per fare il check-in in albergo e subito ci siamo diretti in piazza del duomo. Volevo approfittare per visitare almeno uno dei cocktail bar particolari che ho inserito nella mia whishlist ma purtroppo aprono tutti verso sera. Dopo aver tirato bestemmie per aver letto di uno spritz a 15 Euro, ho optato per cioccolata calda e cheescake da McDonalds 🙃

Finalmente arriviamo all'Alcatraz. Ci piazziamo sul patio rialzato, tanto gli Alcest non sono band da pogo e quindi ci volevamo godere il miglior sound possibile. Tempo di prendere una birretta (6 Euro per una Heinneken, mannaggia al porco di d🤐) e la prima band apre la serata.

I Doodseskader sono un duo olandese che fa un genere davvero tutto suo. Faccio molta fatica a definirlo. Cominciano con una canzone che sembra puntare all'argent metal - un sottogenere specifico ispirato alla colonna sonora del videogioco Doom, composto da un metal pesante e pompatissimo, mescolato a elettronica di stampo dubstep. Entrambi i componenti cantano, uno in growl e l'altro con indole più punk alla "canto come cazzo voglio e non me ne frega se sono stonato, se non ti va bene sono cazzi tuoi". Alcune canzoni hanno un atteggiamento punk, ma molto rallentato e pesante. Incursioni di elettronica invadente e parti di batteria semplici ma davvero originali, non ho mai visto qualcuno suonare così. Il tutto accompagnato dalla proiezione di video asttratti e futuristici con le parole delle canzoni che sembrano tutte attingere all'esperienza di depressione del bassista. Una piacevole sorpresa e una grande fonte di ispirazione, bravi.

La seconda band sono gli Svalbard. Classica band di melodic black metal scandinavo. Doppia voce in scream maschile + femminile. Già non sono un fan del genere, però loro secondo me non sono per niente all'altezza di suonare di fronte ad un pubblico così grande. Non sono in grado di valutarne la qualità della musica perché sinceramente mi sembra tutta uguale e non ci capisco nulla. Però vedere i componenti suonare tutti vestiti di nero, indossando le t-shirt delle loro band metal preferite, ognuno fermo al proprio posto... mi sembrava di essere tornato a quinidici anni fa quando le band underground di miei amici suonavano nelle cantine e nei baretti

Ed eccoci al main event: Alcest
Musicisti incredibili, voci spettacolari che si intrecciano in melodie e armonie sognanti. Veramente non saprei cos'altro dire. Sembrano vivere in un mondo fantasy tutto loro, scrivendo musica ispirata dalle albe e dai tramonti, dalla pioggia, dalla nebbia, dai raggi di sole che splendono sulla rugiada e da quelli della luna che filtrano tra le foglie di una foresta di bambù.
Potete solo ascoltarli per capire. Vi condivido una delle mie canzoni preferite.

Usciti dalla venue, dopo aver cenato con kebab ai falafel, ci dirigiamo al Legend club per partecipare alla Emo night. Entriamo quando l'ultima delle tre band metalcore che suonavano era a metà set. Non che siamo amanti del metalcore ma non abbiamo trovato di meglio. D'altronde dopo di sarebbe stato un dj set di metal nostalgia o qualcosa di simile.
Vi dirò, non che il dj set sia stato così incredibile, un mix di canzoni metalcore che per il 90% neanche avevo mai sentito, insieme a remix tekno improbabili di canzoni metal più famose... però è stato divertente, soprattutto dopo due shot di tequila ahahah!

Devo dirvi che mi sento davvero fortunato ad avere un fratello con cui vado così d'accordo e con cui condividere queste esperienze, perchè mi diverto il doppio ogni volta.

Bene, eccoci alla fine. Spero abbiate apprezzato questo piccolo racconto di vita da metallari ahah

I finally had the chance to see one of my favorite bands live. Alcest play a genre called "blackgaze" because they mix typical black metal sounds like screams, blastbeat drums and tremolo picking guitar parts, but inserted in a shoegaze soundscape, which involves slowed down rhythms, lots of reverb and dreamy melodies.

I went to the concert at Alcatraz in Milan, a venue that is the number 1 reference point for big live concerts in Italy. My brother gave me the ticket for my birthday and we went by train together.
We found out that the concert was brought forward by an hour (unbelievable!) and the doors were set to open at 6:00 PM. Since we had never gone to a concert in Milan on a Saturday night, we decided to look around and find an event to attend in the late evening, but I'll talk about it later.

We arrived in Milan at 3 pm. A small detour to check in to the hotel and then we headed straight to Piazza del Duomo. I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to visit at least one of the special cocktail bars that I have added to my wishlist but unfortunately they all open towards evening. After swearing for having read about a 15 euros spritz, I opted for hot chocolate and cheesecake at McDonalds 🙃

Finally we arrive at the Alcatraz. We stood on the raised patio, since Alcest are not a band to do moshpit and so we wanted to enjoy the best possible sound. Time to get a beer (6 euros for a Heinneken, insert swearing against God in a typical Italian expression) and the first band opens the evening.

Doodseskader are a Dutch duo that creates a genre all their own. I have a hard time defining it. They start with a song that seems to point to argent metal - a specific subgenre inspired by the soundtrack of the video game Doom, composed of heavy and pumped up metal, mixed with dubstep-style electronics. Both members sing, one growling and the other with a more punk nature like "I sing however the fuck I want and I don't care if I'm out of tune, if you don't like it it's your problem". Some songs have a punk attitude, but very slow and heavy. Incursions of invasive electronics and simple but really original drum parts, I've never seen anyone play like that. All accompanied by the projection of abstract and futuristic videos with the lyrics of the songs that all seem to draw on the bassist's experience of depression. A pleasant surprise and a great source of inspiration, well done.

The second band is Svalbard. Classic Scandinavian melodic black metal band. Double male + female scream voices. I'm not a fan of the genre, but in my opinion they are not at all up to playing in front of such a large audience. I can't evaluate the quality of the music because honestly it all seems the same to me and I don't understand anything. But seeing the members play all dressed in black, wearing the t-shirts of their favorite metal bands, each one still in their place... I felt like I was back to fifteen years ago when my friends' underground bands played in cellars and bars

And here we are at the main event: Alcest
Incredible musicians, spectacular voices that intertwine in dreamy melodies and harmonies. I really don't know what else to say. They seem to live in a fantasy world of their own, writing music inspired by sunrises and sunsets, by rain, by fog, by the rays of sun that shine on the dew and by those of the moon that filter through the leaves of a bamboo forest.
You can only listen to them to understand. I'll share one of my favorite songs with you.

After leaving the venue and having dinner with falafel kebabs, we head to the Legend club to participate in the Emo night. We enter when the last of the three metalcore bands that were playing was halfway through their set. Not that we are metalcore lovers but we haven't found anything better. After that, it would have been a metal nostalgia dj set or something like that.
I'll tell you, not that the dj set was that incredible, a mix of metalcore songs that 90% of the time I had never heard of, along with unlikely tekno remixes of more famous metal songs... but it was fun, especially after two shots of tequila hahaha!

I have to tell you that I feel really lucky to have a brother who I get along with so well and with whom I can share these experiences, because I have twice as much fun every time.
