TTT: German Punkrock for Love and Revolution

Hello dear Music Community.

It is time for another #ThreeTuneTuesday. For those not familiar with it, here's an explanation.

About 76 Weeks ago @ablaze started this incredible movement:

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs which I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Or why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and hopefully upvote it. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music.

I talked about "Die Ärzte" last time, a German punk band I discovered in the 90's. While I am a big fan of that band, I also like "Die Toten Hosen".

Back in those days, these two bands were considered a Pepsi vs. Coke thing, you either like Die Ärzte or Die Toten Hosen. Very few people (including me) did not participate in this rivalry and openly announced: Hey, I like them both (although I like Die Ärzte more).

After discovering Die Ärzte it didn't take long to find out there's more to the German punk scene and Die Toten Hosen had just released their album "Kauf Mich!" which includes the track Alles aus Liebe. It was so successful, they even released an English version.

To meet the rhyme and rhythm the translation is a little bit lose. I link you to both versions down below.

It was a new kind of love song for our generation and in the bloom of puberty became the hymn of our young loves everywhere. Almost every party had a karaoke version ready for the moment a young lad wanted to proclaim his love to a lady (Yes, at one point I was one of them 😘).

Shortly after, they released Paradies, one of their most controversial songs.

It is about the "restrictions" set upon us by the interpretation of the bible by the elder generations and catholic church.

Yet, right in the beginning, the first line states "Who(Noone) can tell what will happen to us, mabye it is the truth that live is a trial from God?".

They list all the things we have to do to be considered worthy and escalate to the line "I don't want to enter paradise if I can not get in as myself"

Growing up in a strictly catholic area of middle Germany we started questioning the interpretation of the bible set upon us by others and the rules of society. Progressive thinking entered our minds.

While it was surely not solely because of this song, it played a part in it. We started to feel like those in the late 60s and early 70s who found a new kind of music to express their new kind of thinking.

Have you ever seen A Clockwork Orange? Inspired by that movie Die Toten Hosen came together with a musical producer and wrote a concept album for stage adaption. The main theme "Hier kommt Alex" even made it into the charts.

My best buddy goes by the name Alex and most parties we had in our youth were at his place. His family also owned a cabin in the woods nearby and we spent many Saturday nights with our clique there sitting around the campfire with our guitars. To honor him we certainly played that song a few times.

Even today I still consider him my best friend and my son Hagen (5 years old) thinks of him as his favorite uncle.

I moved to north Germany many years ago and met my wife here. While on a visit Alex met my wife's sister and it didn't take long for him to move up here, as well. 😉

And every now and then, when we have a family get-together, he is most times the last to leave (or me and my family, when meeting at his place) and we put on that song again to remember those times.

I hope you enjoyed this music, whether you understand the lyrics or not. Die Toten Hosen have a few songs released in English, give it a youtube browse, if you want to find more.

Thank you for reading and listening.

Keep on rocking 🤘

Bis zum nächsten mal.

What nice memories 🙂. I wasn't so much aware of the rivalry but Die Toten Hosen have some great tunes.

Hi, thanks for reading and listening 😃

The bands themselves are actually really friendly towards each other, it's just between the fan groups.

Farin Urlaub and his humor. Did you ever see(hear him talk on stage? His mimic and berlin accent give it the extra kick.

Your ATF is an excellent example for that, well chosen.
!LOL
