Amazon Music Unlimited Launches in India – It's NOT Free! How Tech Giants Really Make Money...

Today morning while checking my gmail inbox, I noticed this mail from amazonmusic around - "Upcoming changes to your Amazon Prime Music benefit". Here is a snapshot I took of the email for reference and I am sure they would have sent to everyone who are their Prime members.

The standard prime membership of Amazon costs around ₹1,499/year and here are the benefits that members get::

  • Fast free delivery
  • Prime Video
  • Prime Music
  • Prime Reading
  • Prime Gaming And
  • Early access to deals and Prime Day events

So why now this sudden change around the "Amazon Music Unlimited"? Short answer its all about MONEY forsure and no doubt about it. What was earlier free will now cost you. So ideally Amazon is trying to make a good business model around the music streaming while creating an additional revenue stream from users who want premium features. Following is are the Amazon Music tiers in India?

Want to go Ads FREE you need to pay for it now and for prime members it would cost you another hundered bucks and if not a prime member then you shed more money such that Rs.119/- per month. Pime Music which again has limited Ads will be included for free for Prime members moving forwards. And then there is Music Free plan which will be again be an Ad-supported streaming that is Coming Soon. So one can clearly see nothing is for FREE.. ITs like first make the users addicted marketing it for FREE and then change the policy saying that it is not any more FREE and now you need to pay a certain amount to get that level of user expereince. Lets take an example a user was first listening to all that 100 Million songs at dispersal all for FREE and now you say there would be Ads if you want to listed for FREE - else pay some extra money to get the same kind of user expereince. How fair is that? To be honest nothing is fair and ultimately it is users who will suffer as these big giants are only there to make MONEY and maximizing shareholder value. So who is at loss here - we the users and the best worst part is that we do not have any other option either pay for it or just leave it and move on. These kind of strategies by big giants may make business sense as they are making more money now but in general it is often the users who bear the financial burden and are at loss. Should the governments interfer here? Who knows they are involved here as well with them. This is sperate topic to talk about RIHGT? They rolled that out a while ago here. I don't pay for it. I pay for Spotify instead. I pay for Prime though. I wonder how long before you don't even get the videos for free.
