Three Tune Tuesday - Oh I do like to be beside the b-side

(Edited)

Given I was a bit rubbish last week, and completely missed doing another #ThreeTuneTuesday after folk were kind enough to rate my first post, I thought I'd better pull my finger out and crack on with another.

I thought I'd find it easier to go with a theme, so this week I'm going to hark back to the days of the good old 7" single, and pick some tracks that appeared on the b-side of a single. Lamentably, I think this concept is fading as it doesn't really make sense any more - but back in the day, to flip side of a single was often a place bands would put interesting, even experimental, stuff that they may not want to take up space on an album. Because that was limited on a 12" slab of plastic - another fading concept maybe...

Anyway, I don't think I'm going to aim for weird b-sides today (though I may well do on a later #TTT), but 3 good, solid b-sides that I like.

Maninwhite - The Stranglers

b-side to 'Just Like Nothing on Earth'
I'm a huge Stranglers fan. Have been since I was about 12 in 1979. And there's a load of interesting b-sides I could have chosen - plenty weird, plenty as good as 'mainstream' tunes. But this is what jumped into my head. Trots on at a nice clip with archetypal Stranglers instrumentation. A cracker.

I'm a Marionette - Abba

b-side to 'Take A Chance On Me'
Bear with me - I did warn you in my last post that I like what I like, and I have no problem liking a bit of Abba. That said, this is a corker. Listen to that bassline. Screaming to be sampled. One of my favourite tracks by them.
First single I ever bought, this.

Kid Dynamo - Buggles

b-side to 'Video Killed The Radio Star'
Solid slab of 80s pop. Trevor Horn doing what Trevor Horn does so well.

I could have chosen so many more! Definitely a seam I'll mine again...

This reminds me - I may need to pick up doing my random singles from gribbles' collection posts again....

Anyway - hope you enjoyed the tunes...

Nice idea for a post man, B-sides are for sure a dying if not dead concept, but back in the day they were a great bonus, eh.. Each and every one of these B sides is new to me too, I think the Buggles one is the pick of the bunch, but all were enjoyable, even Abba ;o)
