Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Young Marble Giants - 'Wurlitzer Jukebox'
Young Marble Giants - Wurlitzer Jukebox
I have been completely hooked
on this band for the last few weeks, after having heard a live version of this track. I knew the name of the band, as they often popped up in relation to other UK post-punk acts, but it wasn't until recently that I actually did a dive into their music and definitely am a massive fan. The band was formed in Wales in 1978, consisting of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham, and vocalist Alison Statton. Early on, they had a 4th member Peter Joyce, though for most of the band's life (until their breakup in 1981), they were a 3-piece. Their sound consisted of bass, guitar and digital/automated drums, along with Alison's vocals; they created a really beautiful, minimalistic sort of vibe which her vocals really fit perfectly with. I particularly love this tune, the bass could be funky and aggressive in another context, but it functions here sort of like a drone, with the same basic idea repeating over and over. With the drums, this creates a backdrop that the simple little guitar hits and vocals happen on top of.
