Xenia Rubinos - Hair Receding

I found Xenia Rubinos recently

through Battles, who I shared yesterday, as she was featured on one of their song on their 2019 album. That led me to check out her solo music, and I found some really cool, genre bending stuff. Apparently she has a decent size following, and has performed on well known platforms like the Tiny Desk Concerts via NPR. Rubinos is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, majoring in jazz composition, which is apparent in the complexities of her music; even when she using pop harmonies and structures, there is a lot of interesting takes on them that utilize ideas from jazz and Latin music (which itself has quite a bit of jazz influence). She grew up a fan of classical music, but also was raised around salsa, merengue, and other Latin dance styles, which is definitely apparent in her music. Today's song is from her 2013 album Magix Trix, and was my introduction to her music outside of the Battles compilation. You can definitely hear the Latin influences, particularly in the chord progression; the minor i, iv, and v definitely give that vibe. However, the production is super modern, incorporating some really cool timbres. I particularly love the sound of the guitars, that distortion on them is super cool.
