favorite of mine since I first was introduced to them through the legendary documentary The Decline of Western Civilization; I was immediately intrigued by the '50s rock influences, somehow perfectly mixed with a really dark, aggressive energy, which is definitely their signature sound. A lot of punk bands cite early rock and roll as an influence though often its just the simple harmonic language used, but X definitely uses a LOT of '50s, Berry-esque guitar styles, but without the poppy harmonic language, instead embracing that dark, dissonant sound. The band was formed in 1977 in Los Angeles, CA by John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebrake. Both Doe and Cervenka provide vocals, which creates a really awesome texture; often, one of them will be singing a melody and the other, instead of just providing a harmony (which they will do), drones on a single note, which again, provides a signature timbre of their music. Today's song is from the band's 1982 album Under the Big Black Sun, which is an album that, until a few years ago, I hadn't really gotten into. Although I've been a fan for a long time, I really only ever seriously listened to their first two albums which are considered their 'classics'. However, I was happy to discover that they never really lost it, and continued releasing great music after that, all of which I've been exploring more and more since.
