Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Wipers - 'When It's Over'
Wipers - When It's Over
Wipers were an interesting band
in the history of punk rock in the US, and although they're not often discussed in the sort of pantheon of 'great bands', their influence was pretty wide spread, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, with a lot of the later grunge bands citing them as a direct influence, as well as groups like the Melvins. The band was formed in 1977 in Portland, OR by Greg Sage, Dave Koupal, and Sam Henry. At the time, a lot of the touring punk and hardcore bands sort of skipped that area of the country, so local kids formed their own groups and grew their own scenes, which eventually helped bring those national acts there, and bring attention to the homegrown acts. Wipers had an interesting sound, built around SUPER heavy, loud guitars, and the use of sort of metal/glam inspired lead lines, which a lot of punk bands shied away from. Today's song is from their 1981 album Youth of America and is a great example of their lead sounds; the song is mostly an instrumental, with some really awesome, catchy lead parts. The guitar tone on this track is super cool, it is definitely gritty and distorted, but doesn't really sound like anything else I've heard before.
