Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: The Thermals - 'A Pillar of Salt'

The Thermals - A Pillar of Salt
I realized today while checking out

old playlists of mine that it has been a LONG time since I've listened to The Thermals, so I put them on while working this afternoon. I actually don't know when I first found this band, it might've been a random YouTube sort of thing? I do know that I loved how catchy their songs were; I'd say fun too, but lyrically they aren't always fun haha, though the music can be. The band was formed in 2002 in Portland, OR by Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster. The third spot in the trio went through various hands over the life of the band, before their eventual breakup in 2018. Today's song is from their 2006 album The Body, the Blood, the Machine, which is my personal favorite. It was also produced by legend Brendan Canty of Fugazi-fame. Apparently, this track was in the videogame Skate 3, though I never played it; they definitely garnered some attention from that, as videogame soundtracks have historically been a great way to get new audiences interested in bands. I like the rest of this album a lot, but this single is far and away my favorite track, and remains so to this day.
