The Slits - So Tough (Peel Session)

The Slits are one of the most interesting

and unique bands to emerge from the first wave of UK punk and post-punk, and a band I've loved for a long time since I first stumbled onto their tunes. The band was formed in 1976 in London, and was initially made up of "...Ari Up (Ariane Forster) and Palmolive (a.k.a. Paloma Romero, who played briefly with Spizzenergi and later left to join the Raincoats), with Viv Albertine and Tessa Pollitt replacing founding members Kate Korus and Suzy Gutsy" (Source - Wikipedia). The group had an incredibly unique sound, combining elements of reggae and punk, with their own strange, angular, very non-American, Euro sort of post-punk vibe. Their debut album, Cut, released in 1979, is generally considered a classic in the post-punk world, and was my introduction to the band. This song first appeared there, though on the Deluxe Edition released in 2009, there were other versions of all of these songs, including the Peel Sessions, which is where today's specific tune is from. The original version is sort metallic, and sparse, and reggae-ish (emphasis on the -ish), but this version is entirely different, much more punky with the constant power chords and dissonant lines. Also, the way the chords/vocals related to the backbeat here is super cool, as they're kind of off-set from each other, yet still groove and come back together at the correct points.
