The Replacements - Left of the Dial

The Replacements are a band

I've shared here a lot over the years, and definitely one of my all time favorites, though they were actually a late discovery for me. I knew of the band's name and existence generally for a long time, but it wasn't until my late 20s that I really discovered these guys in earnest. I first came in contact with their earlier stuff, which is much more punky, but as I went through their discovery I discovered how their sound evolved over time. They had a sort of cow-punk period, which wasn't uncommon in that time, but by their third, and especially fourth and fifth albums, they had really expanded their sound; they utilized more "classically rock" influenced ideas, but in what was a new, cutting edge sort of context, helping to define what would be called college-rock or alternative rock. This song is from their 1985 album Tim, which was supposed to be their big major label debut, though due to the band's drunken shows and rowdy antics, that didn't turn out exactly as hoped. However, it has become a classic in the years since, and definitely features some of their best songwriting up to that point.
