Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Super Djata Band, Zani Diabate - 'Zam Sorou'
Super Djata Band, Zani Diabate - Zam Sorou
If you have ever listened to groups
like Tinariwen, then you have been exposed to the incredible combination of American rock and blues and folk/traditional musical styles from Mali and Western Africa. Through the record label Numero Group (who have a ridiculously cool and varied line-up of bands and artists whose music they now put out digitally and on vinyl), I've stumbled onto SO many awesome songs and bands recently, one of which was this band, The Super Djata Band, which was headed up by Zani Diabate, an incredible guitarist and (I think?) singer. You can clearly hear the Malian sound, particularly in the rhythms and trills/flairs they put on the guitar and vocal lines, but also the heavy psych and rock/blues influence, which is SUCH a great combination. This tune is built around bars of six beats, so I suppose 6/4, though it feels more like just repeating 2 beat sections in groups of 6, as you can bob your head or tap your foot more like a rock tune than some sort of waltz. I also love the lofi timbre of everything, it really adds to the vibe for me personally.
