Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Johnny Guitar Watson - 'Space Guitar'

Johnny Guitar Watson - Space Guitar
I was trying to decide on an artist

for today's post, and wanted someone who I haven't shared here before. I was looking through playlists and saw this song, and figured it'd be a great choice. Johnny Guitar Watson was a super influential musician, though I feel like often he isn't cited amongst others like Chuck Berry, a place he definitely deserves to be. He is more well known (generally) for his '70s music, where he worked in the world of funk and played with some huge acts of the time period. This funk era, however, was a sort of reinvention, as Watson already had nearly 2 decades of performing and writing under his belt. In the mid '50s, he was a Rhythm & Blues player (what we'd now call early rock and roll), and his wild style (both on the guitar but also on stage) helped him to become an inspiration for many of the bands that emerged in the '60s rock world. This song was released as a single in 1954, and was definitely far ahead of its time, with the crunchy guitar, and use of reverb and intentional feedback to create atmospheric moments (hence the title). I really love the tune, and definitely recommend checking out his overall discography.
