Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Brad Mehldau - 'St. Mark Is Howling in the City of Night'
Brad Mehldau - St. Mark Is Howling in the City of Night
It's been a while since we've had a
Mehldau post, and I went back and listened to my favorite album of his today, so here we go! Brad Mehldau is a really important artist to me; he and Avishai Cohen were really my introduction to jazz. I was a huge Radiohead (still am) and Mehldau clearly was as well, as we covered their songs. These covers led me to the rest of his discography, some of which was pop/rock oriented, which was sort of an easy in for me. As I got more comfortable with the jazzy ideas in these pop tunes, I began to get into his more 'serious jazz' stuff, which eventually led me to really get into jazz in earnest, and not just sort of intellectually appreciating it for the complexities of the harmonies and rhythms (though I still do that, of course). The aforementioned favorite album is his 2019 release, Finding Gabriel, which is an incredibly modern, NOT typical jazz release. The songs and instrumentation on this album are absolutely incredible, and vary from pop to electronic to jazz and everything in between. This tune uses a bunch of synth sounds as well as strings and keys, with drums that are kind of metal/prog influenced.
