Björk - Cocoon

I hadn't listened to Björk in a while

before today, so I decided to put on some random playlists on Spotify with a varied assortment of her discography. Although I knew of Björk when I was younger, specifically from seeing her wild videos on MTV, it wasn't until I got older that I really began to appreciate her music and just how talented of a songwriter and producer she was. Björk Guðmundsdóttir was born in 1965 in Reykjavík, Iceland and got into music at a very young age, forming a punk band called Spit and Snot and then a fusion band called Exodus. In 1982 she and bassist Jakob Magnússon formed Tappi Tíkarrass, a band that unfortunately not a lot of people know, but definitely deserve more attention. They were a punk band, but incorporated all sorts of other genres and ideas into their music, creating an awesome, unique sound. In 1986, Björk would form The Sugarcubes, an alt. rock band who took ideas from electronic genres, pop, and hip-hop, and brought Björk into the mainstream with their hit singles. When the group split in 1992, she embarked on a solo career which has continued until today; she has 10 full length albums, and has become a worldwide name, creating some of the most interesting, genre-bending and creative albums of the last 30 years. Today's song comes from her 2001 album Vespertine, and has always been a favorite of mine. I love the squishy, clicky, sort of insect like elements that give the beat such a cool texture. This song has a co-writing credit with Thomas Knack, who works under the moniker Opiate, who helped Björk produce the album overall.
