Grapthar's Daily Hive Music Feature: Battles - 'Fort Greene Park'

Battles - Fort Greene Park
I went on a Battles kick all day

today, after realizing I hadn't actually listened to their most recent album (from 2019) in full before. I corrected that mistake, and was really stoked to discover that this album might now be favorite from them. I was first given a Battles album by my friend Mike; he brought his portable hard drive to an old apartment of mine and we traded TONS of music, from which I discovered some of all time favorite bands. Battles were super weird (in the best possible way), and although considered experimental, they were very different from any of the experimental math-rock or prog. bands I had listened to before that point. Battles generally doesn't use odd-meters, or complex harmonies, instead creating super wild textures, glitchy guitar loops, and really solid, heavy grooves, sometimes with vocals or guest vocals, but often instrumental. Their live performances are super interesting to watch, particularly following the looping of wildly affected guitars and synths/keys, handled by Ian Williams. Currently, Williams is one of two members, with drums handled by John Stanier, though the band has been a 3 and 4 piece at points in the past. As mentioned before, this song is from their most recent release, 2019's Juice B Crypts, and is SUCH a cool tune. I love the groove, and the wild sounds from the guitar loops are so up my alley, hehe.
