At The Drive-In - Hulahoop Wounds

I hadn't listened to At The Drive-In

The band live in more recent years (Image Source)
in a few months before today, which is FAR too long in retrospective. So I made sure to put them on while doing some work and then spending an hour or two cleaning the house, doing laundry, etc., and although it has been 2 decades or so since I first found this band, I am never disappointed and find myself loving them more than ever. The band was formed in 1994 and existed until 2001, before splitting into two new groups: Sparta and The Mars Volta. They have since reunited, once for Coachella, and once after that to release a brand new album and EP. While the band started out in the hardcore/post-hardcore world, with that '90s emo tinge, with each album they began experimenting more and more, both in sound and also structure. By the time they split in 2001, their music was definitely on the cutting edge, having pushed the world of hardcore and punk into an entirely new place. This song is from their 1998 album In/Casino/Out, which is maybe my favorite from them, though partly because it just has such nostalgic value for me. This album definitely has a lot of the emo/post-hardcore stuff, but you can already see quite a bit of weirdness happening, with angular, quirky guitar lines, hip-hop influences, and sound design choices that no other band in the scene was attempting.
