Raise a glass to Hamilton. Join the Revolution [ENG-ESP]

First of all, this is not a review, I'm not a movie critic, just a fan. So this is just a friendly conversation about a wonderful show 😉 That said, let's get on with it.

Hello everyone!

Today I come over here to talk about a cultural phenomenon that has revolutionized the Broadway musical industry: HAMILTON (👏🏻👏🏻 cheers erupt, the crowd goes wild!) This musical (brought in its fullness to television through Disney +) is genius, my first approach to it was through the full soundtrack, after seeing a review of a youtuber I follow, called Jaime Altozano, who praised it so much that I said "no, wait, I have to listen to that" I say listen because at that time only the soundtrack was available, since you could only watch the show in Broadway theaters, the film material, had not yet been released.

Well, I downloaded it and... I loved it 😍

It's something I still can't get over after two years into listening to it and seeing it for the first time. And what's great and different about this musical is that it's almost completely rapped!, showcasing a masterful display of talent, incredible lyrics, phrases and melodies that will be stuck in your head all day, and its cast is made up (as if to emphasize the necessary message that their nation, in large part, was formed by the labor of immigrants) of African-Americans, Latinos, Asians and white people as equals. Imagine a George Washington being portrayed by a full-fledged "mulato", the incomparable Christopher Jackson, who makes an overflow of talent when he sings his farewell song... (see the show 🙃).

The play is set in the late 1700s, in the struggles of American independence and tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, his rise to power and his ruin. They begin by introducing the protagonist (almost the entire play as a rap) his struggles for survival as a child, born on a Caribbean island and his journey to America to make his way in life. Then, quickly as a spoiler, they tell you through the other characters, the impact they will have on Hamilton's life, all the way to the person who killed him. Little by little they introduce the other characters, (as is common in musicals) through music, each one with their own song, and each one with a specific sound or theme, which in music we call leit motiv, and of which they make extensive and masterful use in this show. It consists of two acts, the first, more vigorous, as it takes place during Hamilton's youth, the beginning of the wars for independence and the rise of George Washington as the first president, with Hamilton at his side, as his right hand man. The second act, more sober, at times sad, tells of Hamilton's adulthood and maturity, already established in his position and how he becomes the architect of his own misfortune.

The mastermind behind Hamilton is Lin-Manuel Miranda, a visionary and one of my personal idols lately, responsible for the soundtrack of "Moana" and "Encanto". He was inspired by the biography of Hamilton, written by Ron Chernow. It turns out that Lin-Manuel, visionary as I said he was, read the biography and saw a huge potential in it he recognized in Hamilton a powerful character with whom he could tell a story already known to everyone, but with a touch of modernity, achieving a parallelism between the problems that afflicted the society of that time, those that afflict it today... many are still the same.

Hamilton went on to shake up the industry and won 1 Grammy Award for Best Musical, 1 Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama, 7 Drama Desk Awards, 16 Tony Award nominations (America's highest award for Broadway musical theater) winning 11, including Best Script, Direction, Costume Design, Orchestration, Choreography, Supporting Actors in both genders and Best Musical. After its huge success, Disney + set out to make a television version, without altering the theatrical play, so they filmed for 3 days while performing the play live on Broadway, with the original cast that had already been performing for a year in theaters, led by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself in the role of Alexander Hamilton and with wonderful supporting actors, singers and dancers. It premiered in July 2020, of course I immediately downloaded it and well, I fell in love even more 😍.

The scenery is simple in appearance, rustic, fixed throughout the show, with the only distinction of having a rotating system on the floor that adds a lot of freedom and drama to the play. Other than that, some mobile elements such as chairs, desks, stairs and street lanterns fill the scene. A very sober scenographic design so as not to steal even a second of attention from what is happening on stage. The choreography is spectacular, created by Andy Blankenbuehler, he adds subtle details that complement the music and at times it becomes so organic and natural, that you forget that every second of the play is, in fact, choreographed and rehearsed. In other moments you marvel at the accuracy and genius of the choreographer, for example, recreating in reverse a whole scene that had just happened, with the song "Satisfied", or achieving a sudden slow motion effect to give the idea of being in the eye of a hurricane, as if suddenly everything stops, in the song "Hurricane" 😱 Oh God, it's just great!

And what can I say about the music! A masterpiece! Lyrics that can make you have goosebumps, philosophical, profound, funny, emotional and very catchy melodies. Although Lin-Manuel cannot take all the credit in this section, much of the final result of the show is due to the exquisite work of musical director Alex Lacamoire. His musical arrangements are out of this world, as it happenned with the choreography, every sound was meticulously thought out to accompany what was happening in the scene, like the background sound of a bass drum marking the heartbeat of a character who lay dying, and stops just at the moment of his death, or like the pizzicato violins when Aaron Burr's discreet character spoke, as opposed to the sonorous noise when more rebellious characters like Laurens, Lafayette and Mulligan spoke.

Uffff I could go on and on but I'm afraid I've gone too long already 😅. For now I urge you to look for this little gem and enjoy it, I promise you will, you won't regret it, you'll feel excited, changed, inspired and if you are a little like me, with red eyes from crying, I'm not exaggerating 😂.

Hoy vengo por acá para hablarles de un fenómeno cultural que ha revolucionado la industria de los musicales de Broadway: HAMILTON (👏🏻👏🏻 estallan vítores, la multitud enloquece!) Este musical llevado en su plenitud a la televisión a través de Disney +, es una genialidad, mi primer acercamiento a él fue a través del soundtrack completo, luego de ver una review de un youtuber que sigo, llamado Jaime Altozano, quien lo alabó tanto que dije “no, espera, yo tengo que escuchar eso” Digo escuchar porque en ese momento solo estaba disponible el soundtrack, ya que la obra solo podías verla en los teatros de Broadway, el material cinematográfico, aun no se había lanzado.

Pues, lo descargué y… morí 😍

Es algo que no puedo superar aún a los dos años cumplidos de escucharlo y verlo por primera vez. Y lo genial y diferente de este musical es que es casi completamente ¡rapeado!, mostrando un despliegue magistral de talento, increíbles letras, frases y melodías que se te quedan sonando en la cabeza todo el día, y su elenco está conformado (como para recalcar el mensaje necesario de que su nación, en gran parte, se formó con el trabajo de los inmigrantes) por personas afroamericanas, latinos, asiáticos y blancos en igualdad. Imagínense a un George Washington siendo representado por un mulato en toda regla, el inigualable Christopher Jackson, quien hace un desborde de talento cuando canta su canción de despedida… (vean el show 🙃)

La obra está ambientada a finales de los 1700s, en las luchas de la independencia estadounidense y cuenta la historia de Alexander Hamilton, primer Secretario del Tesoro de Estados Unidos, su alza al poder y su ruina. Comienzan presentando al protagonista (casi toda la obra a modo de rap) sus luchas por la supervivencia cuando era niño, nacido en una isla del Caribe y su viaje a Estados Unidos para abrirse camino en la vida. Luego, rápidamente a modo de spoiler, te cuentan a través de los demás personajes, el impacto que tendrán en la vida de Hamilton, hasta llegar a la persona que lo mató. Poco a poco van introduciendo a los demás personajes, dejando (como es común en los musicales) que se presenten a través de música, cada uno con su canción, y cada uno con un sonido o tema específico, cosa que en la música llamamos leit motiv, y del cual hacen uso extensivo y magistral en esta obra. Consta de dos actos, el primero, más vigoroso, ya que transcurre durante la juventud de Hamilton, el inicio de las guerras por la independencia y el alza de George Washington como primer presidente, con Hamilton a su lado, como su mano derecha. El segundo acto, más sobrio, por momentos triste, cuenta ya la adultez y madurez de Hamilton, estando ya establecido en su posición y cómo él mismo se convierte en el arquitecto de su propia desgracia

La mente maestra detrás de Hamilton es Lin-Manuel Miranda, un visionario y uno de mis ídolos personales de los últimos tiempos, responsable de la banda sonora de películas como Moana y Encanto. Se inspiró en la biografía de Hamilton, escrita por Ron Chernow. Resulta que Lin-Manuel, visionario como dije, leyó la biografía y vio en ella un enorme potencial, vio en Hamilton un poderoso personaje con el cual podía contar una historia ya conocida por todos, pero desde el punto de vista actual, con un toque de modernidad, logrando un paralelismo entre los problemas que aquejaban la sociedad de entonces, con los que la aquejan hoy día... muchos siguen siendo los mismos.

Hamilton llegó a revolver la industria y se alzó con 1 premio Grammy al mejor musical, 1 premio Pulitzer al mejor drama, 7 premios Drama Desk, 16 nominaciones a los premios Tony (Mayor galardón estadounidense para el teatro musical de Broadway) ganando 11, incluyendo mejor libreto, dirección, diseño de vestuario, orquestación, coreografía, actores de reparto de ambos géneros y mejor musical. Tras su éxito rotundo, Disney + se dispuso a hacer una versión para la televisión, sin alterar la obra teatral, por lo tanto, filmaron durante 3 días mientras presentaban la obra en vivo en Broadway, con el elenco original que había estado ya presentándose durante un año en los teatros, liderados por el mismísimo Lin-Manuel Miranda en el rol de Alexander Hamilton y con maravillosos actores de reparto, cantantes y bailarines. Estrenó en julio del 2020, por supuesto enseguida lo descargué y pues, me enamoré más aún 😍

La escenografía es sencilla en apariencia, rústica, fija a lo largo de toda la obra, con la única distinción de tener un sistema giratorio en el suelo que le añade muchísima libertad y dramatismo a la obra. Fuera de eso, algunos elementos móviles como sillas, escritorios, escaleras y faroles rellenan la escena. Un diseño escenográfico muy sobrio para no robar ni un segundo la atención de lo que esta pasando en escena. La coreografía es espectacular, creada por Andy Blankenbuehler, le añade detalles sutiles que se complementan con la música y en momentos se hace tan orgánica y natural, que olvidas que cada segundo de la obra está, de hecho, coreográficamente calculado y ensayado. En otros momentos te maravillas tanto con la exactitud y la genialidad del coreógrafo, al, por ejemplo, recrear en reverso toda una escena que acababa de suceder, con el tema “Satisfied”, o lograr un efecto de cámara lenta súbita para dar la idea de estar en el mismo ojo de un huracán, como si de repente todo se detuviese, en el tema “Hurricane” 😱 Ufff es que es genial!

De la música, para qué hablar! Una obra maestra. Letras que erizan los pelos de los brazos, filosóficas, profundas, graciosas, emocionantes y melodías muy pegajosas. Aunque Lin-Manuel no puede llevarse todo el crédito en este apartado, gran parte del resultado final de la obra se debe al trabajo exquisito del director musical Alex Lacamoire. Sus arreglos musicales son de otro mundo, al igual que sucede con la coreografía, cada sonido fue pensado minuciosamente para acompañar lo que sucedía en la escena, como el sonido en segundo plano de un bombo marcando el latido del corazón de un personaje que yacía agonizando, y se detiene justo en el momento de su muerte, o como los violines en pizzicato cuando hablaba el discreto personaje de Aaron Burr, en oposición a la ruido sonoro cuando hablaban personajes más rebeldes como Laurens, Lafayette y Mulligan.

Uffff podría seguir pero temo que me extienda demasiado 😅. Por ahora los exhorto a buscar esta joyita y disfrutarla, les prometo que lo harán, no se van a arrepentir, saldrán emocionados, cambiados, inspirados y si son un poco como yo, con los ojos rojos de tanto llorar, no exagero 😂.
