Fronted by Jaz Coleman, the band that took its first steps in 1979 has perhaps etched itself forever in music history with the introductory riff of the song "Eighties," later used by Nirvana in their hit "Come as You Are"

In 2023, we look back fondly at the 80s, thinking of a less invasive technology, like cassette tapes, Walkmans, consoles such as Atari and Commodore 64, shopping malls, and arcades. However, Killing Joke's song "Eighties" is a social and political critique of that era. "I have to push, I have to struggle," the lyrics say, addressing an increasingly rampant and competitive capitalism, where nothing is enough, and one must always strive to outpace others.

The band faded somewhat from the scene in the 90s, except for the dispute with Nirvana, which was resolved fairly amicably after Kurt Cobain's passing. Nevertheless, the band continued to churn out album after album.

Remarkable is their 2015 album, "Pylon," with songs that seem to foresee the future we sadly know today, referencing many events that have transpired in the last three years: "War on Freedom," "New Cold War," "I Am the Virus" eerily speak to the pandemic period and the new tensions between the Western and Eastern blocs in the world we are currently experiencing.

The most "prophetic" song appears to be "I Am the Virus," where the lyrics refer to a virus instilling fear in the population: "Calculated waves of Fear," "Mind-fucking omnipotence," and then two verses that accurately describe what happened with COVID, "Population in deep denial - Contagion released from a phial," are just some of the references in the song that I invite you to listen to. This year, they released a new single, "Full Spectrum Dominance," which describes a dystopian society where, thanks to technology, a power permeates every aspect of our lives—a Leviathan that sees all, controls all.

Well, more than a prediction of the future, this seems like a description of what's happening right now...

La band del frontman Jaz Coleman,che iniziò amuovere i primi passi nel 1979, è forse rimasta per sempre nella storia della musica per il riff di introduzione della canzone "Eighites", poi usata dai Nirvana nella loro hit "Come as you are".

Noi, nel 2023, vediamo gli anni 80 con tenerezza, pensando ad una tecnologia meno invasiva, come le musicassette, i mangianastri, console come l'Atari e il Commodore 64, i centri commerciali e le sale giochi: però la canzone "Eighities" dei Killing Joke è una critica sociale e politica degli anni 80, "I have to push, I have to struggle" dice il testo, parlando di un capitalismo sempre più sfrenato, sempre più competitivo dove niente è abbastanza e bisogna sempre correre più degli altri.

La band è stata un po' dimenticata fin dagli anni 90, se non per la diatriba con i Nirvana che però si è risolta abbastanza pacificamente dopo la morte di Kurt Cobain, però la band ha continuato a produrre album su album.

Incredibile è l'album del 2015 Pylon, con canzoni che sembrano prevedere il futuro che noi tristemente conosciamo, con riferimenti a molti episodi successi in questi ultimi 3 anni: "War on Freedom", "New Cold War", "I Am the Virus", sembrano parlare con precisione incredibile del periodo pandemico e della nuova tensione tra blocco occidentale e quello orientale nel mondo che stiamo vivendo proprio adesso.

La canzone più "profetica" sembra essere "I am the virus", dove il testo fa riferimento a un virus che crea terrore nella popolazione:
"Calculated waves of Fear", "Mind-fucking omnipotence" e poi due versi che descrivono con accuratezza quello che è successo con il covid "Population in deep denial - Contagion released froma phial", sono solo alcuni dei riferimenti nella canzone che vi invito ad ascoltare, se volete ho messo il link a youtube quì sopra.

Quest'anno è uscito un loro nuovo singolo " Full Spectrum Dominance", che descrive una società distopica dove, anche grazie alla tecnologia, si crea un potere che pervade ogni aspetto della nostra vita, un Leviatano che tutto vede, tutto controlla.

Beh , questa più che una previsione del futuro, mi sembra una descrizione di quello che sta succedendo adesso....
