11/14/25 - A Very 1998 Four Tune Friday On Nineties Friday! 🎸 Covering Four Songs I Discovered On MTV In 1998! MTV Is Now Officially Dead! But I Did Enjoy It In 1998!

On this Nineties Friday I continue on from my Three Tune Tuesday post earlier this week! I covered 1997 Tuesday & cover 1998 today! Check out that post here https://peakd.com/music/@geneeverett/11-11-25-three-tune-tuesday-1997-alternative-rock-edition-mtv-is-dead-it-s-the-official-end-of-the-once-legendary-channel-mtv-i
Where I covered 1997 tunes I remember seeing on MTV when I first got the cable channel as a 7th grade kid! I fast forward to summer 1998 and pick four tunes I remember well that I saw premiering on MTV in Summer or Fall 1998! For Bonus Tune I add in a 1990 tune that I also discovered in 1998 from watching 120 Minutes and seeing this throwback video! MTV sucked in many ways but even in the late nineties I discovered or first heard some great tunes! Enjoy!

Let’s go!
First up it’s Everlast and his breakout single “What It’s Like” which I saw premiere on MTV’s 120 Minutes!

Artist - Everlast
Song - What It’s Like
Album - Whitey Ford Sings the Blues (1998)

Next up it’s the band Harvey Danger and there rad nineties alternative rock hit “Flagpole Sitta” in my opinion one of the best songs ever! Also considered a “One Hit Wonder” but man it’s just great!

Artist - Harvey Danger
Song - Flagpole Sitta
Album - Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? (1998)

Third tune is “Inside Out” from Eve 6! Another music video I remember seeing summer 1998! I indeed discovered the band on MTV!

Artist - Eve 6
Song - Inside Out
Album - Eve 6 (1998)

Last up it’s Beastie Boys and there lead single “Intergalactic” off the 1998 album “Hello Nasty”. As with the previous 3, I also discovered this song from it premiering on MTV. Unlike the other 3 I had obviously heard of the Beastie Boys prior but I didn’t know about a new album and only heard it thanks to MTV.

Artist - Beastie Boys
Song - Intergalactic
Album - Hello Nasty

For my Bonus Jam I pick an older tune from 1990 that I discovered the same way as the rest. While watching 120 Minutes on MTV I saw a throwback I wasn’t familiar with and fell in love with the song & the band! It’s 1990’s Story Of My Life! From the legendary band Social Distortion! The song was 8 years old at time but I hadn’t heard them before!

Artist - Social Distortion
Song - Story Of My Life
Album - Social Distortion (1990)

I like talking music but feel free to talk anything nineties! Cheers!

Some awesome picks for this Friday. I think MTV just ran out of steam, to bad they wet to all reality TV, but it was cheap!
Love the Everlast, Eve 6, Beastie Boys... Great stuff!

Great stuff indeed! It was definitely past MTV’s prime years, but still was pretty cool even in the late nineties! !LADY !PIZZA !ALIVE

The song What It’s Like brings a nice and heartwarming feeling
Very nice set there.
What It's Like - a classic lesson in empathy. You never know what someone you come in contact with is currently going through.
Flagpole Sitta - so unique and memorable, just a great rock tune!
Inside Out - "Or am I Origami" is one of several cool lyric lines and that is the one I always think of when I think of this song. Another great 90s rocker.
The Beastie one is ok but I like their punk better.
Story of My Life - always reminds me of the King of the Hill theme song. Great band, good tune.
Thanks for sharing these!
3 90s songs that come to mind for me would be
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Violet - Hole
Here & Now - Letters To Cleo
As a person who really likes Punk, it was fun to see bands like Green Day bring it back again in the 90s. By the late 90s we had The Donnas come crashing into our brains with their debut album. The Donnas were very influenced by The Ramones, my fave Punk band. I'll drop one video here, in case people only know The Donnas later in their career or maybe they don't know them at all.
Get ready for the crash!

These songs came out three years after I was born, so I'm much happier listening to them today. They've been performed in a very unique way.
