Nineties Friday! 🎸 Pop Punkers MxPx Band Spotlight! Going Through The Bands Nineties Released Albums & Talking & Sharing Tunes! Why They Should Have Been Bigger And more Well Known! 💿

I’m sick with a head cold so instead of a vlog I’m going to just type the story this week. I’ll be talking the band MxPx nineties journey and discuss a band who didn’t get the mainstream success they deserved.

For a quick intro to the band, here is them on MTV’s 120 Minutes being interviewed for 8 minute segment ⬇️
MxPx is a band whose first 5 full length albums were released between 1994-2000. They continued beyond the nineties but were definitely at there peak around 1997-2000. A band who played the major label game by there 1998 4th album and should have been known and has similar success as at least Blink-182 did in 1997/1998 with their song and alt chart hit Dammit
(Blink 182 - Dammit 1997)
Or as big as Green Day or Offspring was in 1994
(Green Day - Basket Case 1994)
(Offspring - Self Esteem 1994)
But it was not to be! They did have some MTV play while still on Indie label Tooth & Nail records with the single Chick Magnet (1996)
(MxPx - Chick Magnet 1997)
A song that sounds nothing like the band but it was a fun tune that got MTV Play in 1997.
They signed to A&M records in 1997 for what would be a 4 album deal. Fast forward the producer they were promised didn’t come through (Jerry Fynn) and instead they used the same producer from there 1996 album. By the time there fourth album and major label debut came out A&M records merged with Interecope & Geffen and all the employees who were behind MxPx were gone. They no longer had any promotion and got less play with their one and only single then they did on the previous indie label record.
The single was I’m Ok You’re Ok
I see YouTube not allowing play on this one unless you go to the site, must be a A&M thing.
They still had a loyal following and toured selling out clubs. In 1999 the label instead of dropping them kept them signed and just didn’t promote or pay to make more then one music video per album.
Below I’ll pick my favorite song from each there five albums released between 1994-2000
There 2000 record being recorded in 1999 and completed but the label sat on it an extra 6 months. Going in reverse order let’s go! ⬇️
Album - The Ever Passing Moment
Released - 2000
Song - My Life Story
I’ll throw in the single & one music video sing from this same album too ⬇️
(Responsibility) feat Norm from Cheers in music video!

Next up going in reverse order is there 1998 record! There most boring album cover art ironically it followed the best album cover art from there 1996 album just prior.
Album - Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo
Released- 1998
Song - Tomorrow’s Another Day

I dunno how they ended up using such a crappy album cover after the rad one from the album just b4 it but here’s a version they didn’t use but had worked up, not great either but anything is better than a field of Buffalo 🦬 ⬇️

Next up 1996’s Life In General! The bands best record!
Album - Life In General
Released - 1996
Song - Doing Time

Two albums to go & both were recorded while the band was in high school! The next up 1995’s Teenage politics on spring break senior year and was released the summer 1995 just after graduation. The first 1994 debut record was recorded while Juniors in high school and released summer 1994 while the band was 16 & 17 and had one more year left. So keep that in mind if you hear a drop off but I like it.
Album - Teenage Politics
Released - 1995
Song - Punk Rawk Show

Album - Pokinatcha
Released - 1994
Song - Want Ad

And they had a 5 song EP released in between their 1997 & 1995 full length albums so here’s a song from that!
Album - Move To Bremerton EP
Released - 1996
Song - Move To Bremerton

That’s the nineties album run! The band went on releasing albums until taking a break in 2009 and today they tour part time mostly playing weekend shows but started releasing new music in 2018 and their last album was 2023. The new stuff is really good honestly. Here’s a bonus look at one song off each the last two albums (2018 & 2023) Frankly the 2018 & 2023 albums feel like their up there with the nineties stuff. The 2000’s stuff wasn’t as good.
Album - MxPx (Self Titled)
Released - 2018
Song - Let’s Ride

Album - Find A Way Home
Released - 2023
Song - Not Today

Ok ok one last bonus! They released a cover songs album in 1996. It’s not nineties tune but their cover was recorded & released in 1996 so why not! Here’s a classic cover of Summer Of 69!
Album - On The Cover
Released- 1996
Song - Summer Of 69
