Ashlee’s Nineties Friday Tunes! 🎺
Gene Joins For Double The Late Nineties Tunes & Fun! 🎸 1999 & 1998! Ska Songs & Talk! 💿
It’s Nineties Friday! I (Gene) already did a solo post talking Soundgarden and doing quite the deep dive, but Ashlee last minute wanted to join the Nineties fun & share some lesser known Ska tunes so I’m joining the fun too!
We both pick albums released within a year of each other in 1998 & 1999 🎺 🎸💿 from the Ska scene! We’ll each pick a DailyJam & BonusJam from one album & band each!
(1998)
Ashlee picks the lesser known band Edna’s Goldfish and there 1999 second and final album 💿 “ The Elements of Transition”.
Edna’s Goldfish - Veronica Sawyer
First up it’s the single released in 1998 the song “ Veronica Sawyer” This tune got some play on MTV’s 120 minutes, a show on Sunday nights at 11PM that showcased lesser played alternative bands. In the eighties it was mostly alternative rock and in nineties more punk rock. In 1998 ska was in the mainstream with bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones hitting it big so as always smaller bands get put on. Unfortunately this band didn’t media it even though this song was a perfect catchy radio single.
Edna’s Goldfish - Avoiding the Swerve
For BonusJam Ashlee picks the song “ Avoiding the Swerve” from same album. It’s not quite as radio friendly hit sounding as the first time but it’s a fun tune!
(1999)
Gene goes with a very similar sound and style with the band Spring Heeled Jack. Also a Ska band who only released two albums in the late nineties. I go with the second album 1999’s “ Songs from Suburbia” picking the song Jolene for my DailyJam! It’s not a cover, it’s a catchy radio friendly original song that I honestly think is a hit single quality tune that just didn’t make it big.
Spring Heeled Jack - Jolene
I just found a live performance version from 1998 at a NYC venue I went to probably 50 times between 1999-2010 ⬇️
Roseland ballroom a 3300 person venue, so they definitely were the opener. Just a clear catchy tune I believe should of been as big as this ska classic ⬇️
Just saying it’s that catchy! But it was a tiny record label that released the album & a year or two late for Ska to be on MTV during regular hours. For my BonusJam from Spring Heeled Jack I picked the song “Pop Song”. Similar to Ashlee’s album picked, the DailyJam really is the best song on album by miles. At least in terms of it as a potential hit, the rest aren’t on same level, though still a fun good song!
Spring Heeled Jack - Pop Song (Green)
That’s it! Hope you enjoyed!
We don’t post on this account often but Ashlee felt like doing it so we teamed up for a rare joint post! If this music was to happy sounding for ya go check out my solo post covering a Seattle nineties legend! ⬇️
Cheers!
I did a Nineties Friday Bonus Post!
