‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ is the eighth studio album by the British progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973 in the United States and 24 March in the United Kingdom.

The concept album has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history.

The album builds on ideas that Pink Floyd had previously explored in their concerts and recordings, but distances itself from the extensive instrumental pieces that characterised their earlier work, especially after Syd Barrett's departure in 1968.

The album's subject matter encompasses issues of conflict, greed, ageing, fear of death and mental illness, inspired in part by Barrett's deterioration.

Production took place at Abbey Road Studios in London, using advanced recording techniques and analogue synthesisers.

‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ was a resounding commercial success, topping the Billboard 200 and remaining on the charts for an all-time record 937 weeks.

The album's success generated unprecedented wealth for the four band members. Richard Wright and Roger Waters acquired impressive country homes, while Nick Mason became a keen collector of luxury cars.

In addition, part of the proceeds went towards the production of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’.

Thanks to his production work, Alan Parsons received a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Sound Engineering’ in 1973, which enabled him to launch his own career as an artist. Although Waters and Gilmour have downplayed his contribution to the album's success, Mason has acknowledged and praised his important role in it.

In addition to its sales success, the album received critical acclaim and is considered a milestone in modern music and a landmark in rock history. Its innovative production and philosophical lyrics have influenced numerous artists, and its iconic cover has become an enduring cultural symbol.
