On January 9, 1984, the iconic American hard rock band Van Halen released their sixth album entitled “1984”.
This album has established itself as one of the band's most emblematic and successful, both in terms of sales and chart positions.
“1984” marked David Lee Roth's last collaboration as vocalist, as he would leave the group in the spring of the following year due to growing tensions with guitarist Eddie Van Halen.
The album reached the number two spot on the Billboard album chart, second only to Michael Jackson's “Thriller” phenomenon.
“1984” includes a number of hits that became classics, such as ‘Jump,’ ‘Panama,’ ‘I'll Wait’ and ”Hot for Teacher.”
In particular, “Jump” made it to #1 on the Billboard singles chart, becoming a rock anthem.
This album was also the first that Van Halen recorded in his personal studio, 5150, located in Eddie Van Halen's home, a name that would later be used for his next work.
“1984” is one of the band's two albums to have sold over 10 million copies in the United States, cementing their legacy in rock history.
“Jump” stood out as one of the album's most successful songs, ranking in the top 10 most-radioed songs of the year and selling more than 3 million copies, making it one of the most popular rock songs of the decade.
In addition, “Panama” became the album's third single, reaching number 13 on the singles chart in June of the same year.
Undoubtedly, “1984” left an indelible mark on rock music.
