Glad to meet you again!
Fancy this, us Finns actually gave the name to that weapon.
The incendiary bottle itself was not a Finnish invention. Improvised petrol bombs had been used earlier, notably during the Spanish Civil War. But the name “Molotov cocktail” (Molotovin cocktail) originated in Finland during the Winter War of 1939–40. The Imperial War Museums likewise identifies Finnish forces using what became known as the Molotov cocktail against Soviet tanks during the Winter War.
The joke was aimed at Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov. Soviet propaganda claimed that the bombing of Finland was humanitarian assistance — famously giving rise to the Finnish sarcastic nickname “Molotovin leipäkori”, Molotov's bread basket, for Soviet cluster bombs.
The Finnish response was essentially:
Oh, Molotov is sending us food?
Fine. We'll provide the drinks.
Hence Molotovin cocktail — Molotov's cocktail — for the bottles of flammable liquid thrown at Soviet vehicles.
Interestingly these weren't all merely bottles filled by soldiers in sheds. Finland began industrial production of them, with large numbers manufactured at the state alcohol monopoly's Rajamäki plant. The IWM specifically notes that bottles used against Soviet tanks were filled at Finland's state vodka distillery.
So Finland didn't invent the petrol bomb, but we sure invented its internationally successful brand name.
And almost ninety years later, people all over the world are still unknowingly repeating a Finnish Winter War joke whenever they say “Molotov cocktail”.
Oh and I forgot. I think I liked the song. Listening to it again. I don't find rap music often very interesting, but this one wasn't that bad. :)
