Wicked

All things truly wicked start from innocence.

- Ernest Hemingway -

I recently delved into my Spotify playlists looking for something I'd not listed to for a while and came across a Chris Isaak playlist, a fellow who's music I have a lot of time for. He came onto the scene in the mid-1980's and backed up his first album a couple of years later but it wasn't until the song Wicked Game in 1989 (off his third album) that he got the attention I believe he was due. So, I pressed play on my Chris Isaak playlist and for the last few days it's been on a heavy rotation.

Apparently Isaak wrote the song soon after receiving a phone call from a women calling with the intention of arranging a hook up with him and it's about powerful "attraction towards people that are not necessarily good for you," to quote Isaak himself.

For me, it's just a pretty cool track and I like it a lot.

Rather than just share the track itself I've added a couple different covers of it which are both completely different from the original and each other. You can find them below linked by the artist's name.

Chris Isaak - Parra for Cuva ft. Anna Naklab - Hauser

I've heard covers that are much better than the original and the opposite also, some covers are simply heinous; I don't mind that they occur though, it's often interesting to hear someone's interpretation of an original song I like, a blend of the original and the personality, perception, artistic creation, tone or mood that the new artist brings.

In the case of the three tracks above, all completely different interpretations, I like them all and I wonder what you think. If you feel inclined, take a listen of each, pick a favourite and comment below with why, or if you hate them all comment below with why. You may also like to share the original and a cover of a track you really like so feel free to do that also.

Music has a way to unite the spirit with mood as well as the situation. As far as I am concerned, music is more spiritual

I agree with that, it can be very emotive. Is there a particular type of music you prefer or do you match it to your moods and emotions?

I do like the original.
The second one, I really like her voice, but I think I would have liked the musical arrangement to be more Stripped back.
Then the cello, its one of my favourite instruments and it brings new depth to the song. It's very beautiful. Hmmm, I think I'll go with Hauser right now, but I also love the lyrics.
Thanks for the introduction xxx

Hauser, a really nice choice I think. I like all of these versions and would be hard-pressed to select one I like more than the other - They all have a place in my life it's just dependant on my mood.

I'm glad you found one you like and also hope you're well. I know you've been on the olives but also that you've had a few wobbly days.

I remember when that song came out. It was one of the first CDs that my dad ever bought. Players were still really expensive, but he had a nice Sony one that he still has today.

What I loved too were the devices that came a little later on and you could see the various sound levels and as the song played the display jumped around to visualize the various frequencies and stuff. My uncle had one and I loved to watch it lol the small things!

I bought it too, and still have it actually...although it's in a big storage tub with a lid on it with all the rest of my CD's. I really should get rid of them but until I don't have the space to store them I'll hang on to them I guess.

I remember saving up for ages to get a CD player and felt like the king when I finally did - A very treasured item from my mid-teens.

I remember that feeling as well. I still remember the store I bought it from too which isn't around anymore. Eventually I upgraded to a Sony 5 disc changer and that thing was sweet! I moved all my CD's to a binder a long time ago. Threw away the cases and liner notes. It takes up way less space, but I honestly never use them anymore, so I should just get rid of them.

I remember putting an after market six disc changer in one of my four wheel drives...I felt like the lord of music. These days, cars don't even include a CD player. 😁

(Edited)

Gonna give his a whirl while I draft my own post for TTT!

Edit - ah, so that's who sings that song! I didn't know that haha but I know the song well! I enjoy the original for sure but those other ones were decent tracks. If I didn't have the memory associated with the first one I would have been more open to the others I think!

Edit 2 - I listened to Parra Cuva again and I know I've heard that version a few times as well! I don't mind it now that I listened to the original a few times to get it out of my system haha

There's a lot of good covers out there and some really terrible ones. It'll be interesting to see the ones you choose.

The songs were great! I didn't pick him for my TTT this week though, more classic and hidden Christmas tracks! I've been having fun finding some deeply hidden ones lol bands and artists I've never heard of before. Thankfully no incredibly creepy ones like heavy metal lol

Music, the gift that keeps on giving. It's cool right? I wonder where humanity would be without it.

Seriously dude. I find things all the time that I enjoy quite a bit and I dig into them more and find out they’ve been making music for 10-15 years. Wild lol. That barely scratches the surface too because that’s only western music never mind African or Asian.

Off topic but Emma H hasn’t lost her hive keys again right? LOL I haven’t seen her around and want to make sure she’s okay. She’s probably busy but just checking to see if she jacked this account too hahaha

I love a good cover, bad one can be painful though. After listening to the first two I thought I was going to say I didn't like the song but Hauser's version made me think the lyrics are to blame. It's still more mellow than I usually go for but could listen to it on certain occasions.

Already had a covers post outlined for future use so I'll just drop the tunes here.

Ghost of Tom Joad by Bruce Springsteen is one of those songs that I first heard as a kid and always stuck with me. Then Rage Against The Machine went and made it heavy a few years later. Eventually Bruce hooked up with the guitarist from Rage and blended the two together for yet another take on the song.

I think it's one of those *need to be in the mood) tracks, but also the fact there's so many versions of it there's probably one for everyone's taste. The music I listen to is so varied that this, and others like it, fit in when the time is right.

Those tracks you linked...quite good and another indication of how giving a single track can be when presented through someone else's perspective and creativity.

Thanks for commenting.

Ummm

I would go for parra for cuva
It is the best one among these three, so soothing.

I listened to HIM's rock/metal version of Wicked Game. Obviously the original is much softer, sad and melancholy but truly beautiful

It's a nice song I think, no matter the version and I'd say it's a credit to Chris Isaak that so many want to cover it.

Thanks for the tip.

It's amazing how a song can have different effects when sung differently. The original sounded like a straight love song. The second felt a bit haunting, and was longing for someone. The last one was very interesting visually, and sounded ephemeral. Thank you for sharing them, they were all very nice.

I'm glad you liked them and yes, it's incredible how moving music can be and how the same track can be presented so differently. There's other versions too, I think it's one of those songs that lends itself to different interpretations.

Are there any covers you like or prefer over the original?

I usually prefer the original, but I do like some covers especially when they turn slow songs to alternative rock.

Always be my baby - Mariah Carey / David Cook
Smooth Criminal - MJ / Alien art farm

Here are some of two of the ones I really like. I don't think they're better than the original, but I think they do those justice.

Michael Jackson had some talent for sure, as does Mariah Carey; it's such a shame how things went for MJ, he went a little strange. Good music though.

Wicked Game is one of my favorite songs of all time. 🤣 Another one I love is I Put a Spell on You, but sung by Annie Lennox! And the video of the horses.... awesome!

I'm glad you like it, me too, I heard it all those years ago and rushed out to get the CD. He's a good artist.

I can't say I know that Annie Lennox song but when I heart it I'll probably know it.

It would have been cool if her name was Nani Lennox huh? 🤔🤪

😁 the song here

Enjoy!

"I Put a Spell on You" is a 1956 song written and composed by Jalacy "Screamin' Jay" Hawkins, whose own recording of it was selected as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Good morning Galen. It's been years since I've heard Chris Isaak's song, the theme is fantastic. Not only for the lyrics and melody, for me above all stands out the atmosphere of the song, with Chris Isaak's voice and accompanied by the electric guitar. Of the three versions I choose Chris Isaak's, I don't like to say bad things about artists who have put work and talent in their creations, but I will say something about the reason for my choice. The version of Parra for Cuca, I don't understand it, and the version of Hauser seems cold to me.
Big greetings, have a great day or what's left of it.

It has a nice tone doesn't it?

He's a good song writer and has a versatile voice which I guess opens up his options as far as what to write and sing; I think if I had to choose just one of these three versions I'd also choose the original although not because it's my favourite, they're all favourites, more because it was the track that started it all and inspired so many other versions.

I think it's quite ok to say you (or anyone) has a preference or that one doesn't like a particular track and, depending on how it's done, it doesn't have to get personal. If someone was to say, I hate Freddie Mercury, it'd be personal...If someone was to say, Queen's music is not at all suited to my tastes, then it's not, it's just personal choice.

Thanks for commenting. It's almost 19;40h here, Tuesday night and I'm looking forward to a quiet night, I might start a new Netflix series. Tomorrow is my last day of work (for the year), it'll be a heavy day, but there's light at the end of the tunnel.

I hope you're well and have had a good start to the week.

What a beautiful song, I've always loved it!!!

I listened to the three versions and I like the original and the Hauser version the most.

The original one because I love the voice, it takes me back to the 80's and that's great for me. I love 80's music, especially the slow ones.

And the Hauser version because I've listened to other songs by him, and besides being gorgeous I love the cello! I love both violin and cello!!!! This version has a lot of sensuality, it's magnificent!

Thanks Galen!😀

I figured you'd like the tracks, they're all so nice. I like all three a lot, there's a right time to listen to each, mood dependant.

I'm off to read and listen to some soft music right now...last working day for the year tomorrow morning, it'll be a full-on day, but I'm looking forward to starting and finishing it.

I just wrote tomorrow's post (it's about insects) and am ready to relax now, with my book. Have a nice day.

I hope you're well.

A wonderful melody, which sounds beautiful in any performance.
The covers are great, but the original is still the best for me.
The sound of the guitar and his voice is what makes this song for me.
Besides, this is the track with which I experienced my first kiss. Although the love was short-lived, I still remember the song with which that moment happened 🙂

That's a great memory to have because of this song, nice one!

It really is a good song I think and it is probably one many people can remember well for similar reasons to you.
