Pulling home

avatar

1000019388.jpg

It's not always behind me, but sometimes it is...because I tow it behind my four wheel drive; I mean home...a part time home I guess I should call it.

That's my four wheel drive in the image...I love that thing. It has a beastly twin-turbo V8 diesel engine which I've had performance-tuned and, to put it plainly, it goes like the fucken clappers and has a fucken abundance of power! It's a good thing too because also in the image is my caravan, all three tons of it, so I need the power my vehicle delivers.

Pulling home

Australia is a big country with a lot of wide open spaces and the best way to see it is by road...and a lot of those roads are four wheel drive only.

I like those off-road roads the best and my four wheel drive eats them up even when towing. I've travelled all over this county and stayed in some of the most amazing of spots, remote and far away places, and slept on the ground under the stars for much of that time...but sometimes a little more luxury is needed right? This is where my caravan comes into play; it's nine metres long and three tons of fuck yeah!

It's self-sufficient with 200 litres of fresh water tanks, a grey water tank of 110 litres, 300 amp hour lithium batteries fed by 420 watt solar panels, full kitchen with cooktop grill and oven, queen sized bed and full ensuite toilet, washroom and shower...with a clothes washing machine as well. It's fully insulated, has double glazed windows, CD/Bluetooth stereo with internal and external speakers, LED lighting throughout and externally, reverse-cycle air conditioning, club lounge seating, dining table, DVD Player and TV, Starlink and more...and it's fucken awesome. Outside there's independent dual axle suspension, off road tyres, true-core duragal box chassis, checker plate sides for stone protection, storage areas, outside shower, picnic table, roll out awning and...I think you get the idea. Oh, it's fully Australian made too, something that's important to me.

1000019389.jpg

Pulling home around like this, my mobile one, is something I want to do more and more.

The plan is to work from it, to travel around Australia living wherever the fuck I want to, and working as I go. It's something I've been working towards for a long time and so much effort has gone into making it a reality, and while I'm not quite ready to take off for an extended trip just yet, I look forward to shorter ones until the big trip happens.

I've slept in the dirt, I mean literally, on a bedroll upon the bare ground with a million stars overhead, with a crackling fire beside me and frost and dew settling on my sleeping body; I loved it and will do it again but some comfort is a good thing and my caravan certainly delivers that. I've worked for it so why the fuck not huh?

I'm thinking of doing a post that delves into the caravan a little deeper, with photos as well, at some stage, but for now...well, I'm out pulling my home around so I've got better things to do.

Oh those are indeed getting more beautifull. I get what the Americans see in the big trucks... they are growing on me 😱

It's more about it being necessary. It honestly drives like a tank, but when you are towing 26 feet of trailer at 7000 pounds or so, it gets squirrely with anything smaller. Especially once you load all your stuff in as well as a full bed of wood. Tongue weight, axle weight, GVWR, and a bunch of other numbers all make a difference.

Nah for sure I can believe you on that one!

We don't have those beasts here... I mean you can import them but at a price.

Anyways... what size motor does that thing have?

6.0 Liter V-8 360 Horse Power 380 lb-ft torque Max tow capacity is 14,500 pounds.

Yep, I figured if you saw this post you'd make a comment as I know you have a caravan. Nice tow vehicle too.

Thanks, it's not the greatest, but it does the trick. I blew a cylinder on my old truck, so I had to quick find a nice used truck. We can't do the offroading like you do, but it's a nice home away from home. My wife would be more than happy just going on the road as a "full-timer", but I like having a home base to come back to.

The home base is a good idea, that's what I'll be doing, swing home every few months or so for a week, doctors appointments and all then go again.

Sounds like a great plan!

This is AMAZING!! I love it. If I'm being honest I haven't slept in a caravan since my early 20s (a looong time ago). But it's not because I wouldn't but because of - reasons. Vacations spent overseas or whatever, just not camping. Also, hubby is not much into caravan, he totally would go tent-camping but caravan? Anyways, one of my dreams is to go cross country (US). Your rig would be freakin' awesome to do so.

I hope you're going to have many lovely trips with your partner in this set up.

Caravans have changed so much...bigger, heavier and way more feature-packed. I have the vehicle to tow with (my Landcruiser) and I love road trips and the outdoors so it makes perfect sense to have one.

It's not for everyone I guess, caravans I mean, but it's a good life, or so I believe, and because I'm in Australia there's enough space and places to go to spend a long time on the road, which is my plan...eventually.

A big lap in that set up would be amazing, looking forward to reading all about one day.

Yeah, it seems the appropriate and awesome thing to do and so it's happening...at some stage. Until then, I'll just do shorter trips and live my best life.

It´s really impressive that home you carry back there of your four wheel drive. I've always wondered how it would be like to live and travel in one of those, I'm pretty sure that I've never seen a pulling home here In Venezuela. or not that I could remember.

I'd love to read a whole post of the caravan, how's it in the inside and how does it look a trip from there.

I'll do a post about the interior at some stage, I'd have liked to incorporate that into this post but I didn't have time to get the photos. I'll get to it at some point when I have the time and if you happen to see my post then you can check out the interior.

I've never liked camping (been a few times and tried to like it, think I Just like the activities surrounding camping but not the actual sleeping in the tent part). Haven't tried a caravan but I could probably cope a little bit XD Yours looks fancy.

Are you thinking of permanently setting up in the caravan and being a grey nomad or just going on extended trips in the satellite home and returning to the home base in between?

I'm not grey, more a delectable mocha colour, although I have some distinguished looking white hair on the sides of my head...so grey works I guess. Lol.

Yeah, I plan to take lengthy trips, the idea would be 12-24 months with stops back in home here a couple times to take care of business with the houses and all. I could work from the RV so it'd be good from that aspect but I'd rather not be working...just funning!

Oh nice. You'll still have fun and one day we'll either switch to a better economic system or you'll retire/cut back on work so that the trips can be all fun :D

Top notch post right here bro. Fucken Aye.!!

That caravan is on my bucket list. So eagerly awaiting the photo post with as always the colorful writing you always deliver.

For now this will have to do.

Fucken A, indeedy!

I like your spot man, and who doesn't like a camp fire...but is that a perfect fucken parking spot for my RV just over the pond there? Methinks it is!

I'll get a post done of the interior of the caravan at some stage.

This is getting scary with the timing of your posts. I have been touching base with guys I have served with. One in particular is doing what you aim to do. He has an RV and just travels and works from his remotely. He is loving life.

Here, they call it the big lap meaning travelling around the entire country, and that's my plan for sure. I'd rather not work doing it, maybe blog my way around because there's some cool places, too many to list, but I could work also, and my partner as well, so it'll help find the adventure. Life is too short not to huh?

Sounds like a good plan and I'm sure you two will make it happen. Yes, life is too short for one not to see those cool places. I think the best part will be sharing it with her. That is what I liked about traveling, was sharing it with my family.

Yeah man, she's a good one (tolerates me for one thing) and it's nice to have her to share adventures with.

A washing machine! That is what I call a caravan. I am sure you are looking forward to the day when you can take that beast on the long journey.

Well, it's my least important accessory but it came with it from factory. It's a pretty legit bit of kit though, overall, and is going to work well for what I do and want to do.

But where's the MG mount?

You got a date picked out for pulling out on the big trip?

0

Look, I'll be honest, I was going to go with the MG option but instead decided to fit the Phalanx CIWS...there was a supply issue so I'm still waiting for the installation.

Ok, maybe I got the MG mount and a "fifty" as well. Lol.

Nah, no date picked yet, still working on it, but that's the plan. Until then it'll be smaller trips, long weekends and one to two weeks long when time permits.

No wonder you got the performance tuning, gonna need it if they ever get around to installing that CIWS. :D

Heh, there's places out west (US) where you could run around with and even shoot a ma deuce as long as you had your Class III tax stamp for it. Just can't use tracers or exploding targets on federal land.

Ah, gotcha, get a few shakedown cruises in. Well, try not to have too much fun and excitement out there!

Woww I love that caravan!!! It looks super!!! I can imagine going wherever I want, being able to work wherever I want... I need internet, but if there is it I would have no problem... and go to many places.... uuu I'm daydreaming.

I'm going to love to see more of your caravan, congratulations, enjoy it a lot, well deserved!!!

Wow, it's fantastic!

I'm waiting for good times to make a similar purchase, but I haven't decided yet whether to go for a caravan, a camper or a van.

I've seen some nice Motorhomes that are a bit dated but very comfortable, but they don't have the comfort of a van that is more agile.

My dream, however, would be this...

unimog.jpg

You can get anywhere and it's also very comfortable in terms of habitability, only that it costs a lot, lol!

0

Yep, there's a lot of those here, what you show in the image, but they are very costly, around $350,000+.

0

avatar

Yes indeed this one in euros cost exactly 350,000 but it has already been sold.

Obviously it will remain a dream, but I was thinking about something human and affordable; I have been thinking for a long time about buying a VAN that I would then like to camperize personally.

Ford and Ducato can be found at excellent prices and then slowly the camperization is carried out.
The problem is that in Italy it is difficult to have them approved in fact those who carry out this operation then have the vans approved as vans in Germany.

We have loads of those vans and motor homes too, Sprinters, Ducatos, Transits and so on. The nomad life is incredibly popular here and with so much room and so many things to see there's no wonder why.

Well yes in your area there is a lot to see, I have two friends who started to live a life on Tour, they moved from Reggio Calabria to Australia and for a while they worked in a pastry shop.

Then they bought a Van and started touring the country, they stopped every now and then they worked a bit and then they left again.

The fact of being able to work while traveling is in my opinion the best, maybe the only thing better is being able to travel without working, eh eh!

Good for them, I imagine that they had a pretty good time.

Car trailers were very popular before 1990 in the Balkans, when many of my countrymen towed them to Greece on the sea. There are still many auto camps there to this day.
My uncle had one. Adria 5m long. We (kids) often played in it, but I never went camping with him.
More tempting than a car trailer, for me it's a camper, but it can't go on all terrains where a good jeep with an axle trailer can.
Your combination is great.

0

It's very popular here, and in many other countries, for those who see the benefit.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Benefit?
To have the freedom to stop anywhere along the road and watch the sunset, the dawn, the lake, the river, the sea from the mobile living room...
Staying as long as you want and where you want, in your "mobile home", is really worth it.
Ok, you can do the same with a tent, but the comfort with a trailer is much greater, you can settle in the desired location more quickly, there is no stretching of the tent...

0

That's exactly what I meant, obviously.

Wow that looks neat as fuck (excuse my language). What freedom it gives you along with some nice comfort. I know you deserve that.
I've roughed it myself over the years, I'll happily go for some comfort now.
Love your plan, to be nomadic, you'll be living the dream, bring it on I say xxx

I think about nomading every day and this rig is going to help me do it; small trips at first and then longer. It's something I need I think, the freedom of the road, wide open spaces and all. Back in the day I would have cinched up a saddle on a horse with a bedroll on the back and head off into the wilderness...these days...well, there's a bit more luxury. 😉
