I like she hate

blingdingellingthingeelingskibblingringading.jpg

Last week my partner and I had an appointment in the middle of the day; we both took a little time off work and went together in my work car after I picked her up from her workplace. She got in and, after a bit of a kiss and my hand wandering to...well never mind about where it went...she sat back in the passenger seat and rolled her eyes then announced, I hate this.

She wasn't talking about the impending meeting which wasn't for a very good reason in itself, she was talking about the music I had playing. I sort of expected the comment...she's never liked that band. Anyway, I changed it; I'm good like that I guess, I don't want to make her feel uncomfortable and with the rather important meeting looming over us I didn't want to stress her out any further.

We are happy to accommodate the other person's likes and dislikes and often support the other despite not feeling all that interested in the thing at hand; it's what a relationship is all about I guess, give and take. That goes for music as well and while there's not a huge amount that I like and she doesn't, or vice versa, there are few here and there and I thought I'd share a handful just because.

Here's the track that was playing in the car when she got in the other day. I think it's pretty good but she's never liked it. I'm not sure why, she say's it's a combination of the guy's voice and the guitar riffs though. I'm not going to argue with her - she doesn't like it and that's that. Living Colour - Love Rears Its Ugly Head

Let's up the ante somewhat with this track that my girl absolutely loathes! It's from the first Blade movie and was the music used in the 'blood rave' scene. She didn't mind the movie and can tolerate the track in that scene...but if she hears me playing it she cringes and leaves the room...unfortunately for her it's often on very loudly and another room doesn't provide sanctuary. In all honesty, I have to approach with caution here...if I push my luck I might end up dead, or worse...banned from those places on her that my hands like to wander. Confusion (Dub - Extended Edit)

And now for a change of pace. This track was used in a movie version of Romeo and Juliet and whilst the instrumental music appeals to my girl the singer's voice does not. Once again, she can tolerate it in the movie but as a stand-alone track, nope, she's not having it. It's actually the same with Gwen Stefani's voice...an artist I like also. Des'ree - I'm Kissing You

I think it's quite normal and healthy for people/partners to disagree over music and I don't have a problem with my partner not liking these tracks or any others I like. There's a few others she's not keen on, not all that many though really and there's not much that she likes and I do not. I wonder about you and your partner though.

Do you both have the same taste in music and like all the music the other does or are there tracks you don't agree on? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below, maybe share the track you don't like that your partner loves or the one your partner hates and you love.

My hubby really likes upbeat music but I hate it, I sometimes consider it especially if I am busy but I try to ask him to change it to a little bit of slow.Good thing he always listen😅

It's quite normal to have different tastes in music and very important to have one's own preferences rather than be influenced away from them by a partner.

hehe the other day I had my earbuds in - and the hubs is like - you can put your music on unless...

too late. LOL

He was about to say unless its music I don't like.. and my country music went RIGHT up! hahahaha

He actually doesn't hate country - but he just wasn't in the mood.

Once i changed it over though - it was too late. I started singing, he started grinning - and we were both happy hehehe

ME TOO!!!!

Growing up I always thought it was super hick. hahaha But I had never really listened to it. One day I was sitting outside of a restaurant waiting for my order - and I heard this one song I thought had really nice lyrics

When it was over - I thought huh... ok i guess i like ONE country song.

Then for the next week or so, I really wanted to hear it again! But didn't remember the lyrics enough to know the song - so I kept listening to the country station waiting for it to come on.

While days past, I fell head over heels in love with country!!

Hands down - favorite country band - Dixie Chicks!! Saw them three times in concert - but Tim McGraw was amazing in concert too! hehehe

the thing i love most is they are really amazing musicians!! and their harmonies are usually impeccable... and the lyrics tell such wonderful stories!!!

I saw the Dixie Chicks twice and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill together once...great concerts. I've seen Keith Urban three times too, Eagles as well, loads of others as well.

70% of the music I listen to is country music. I'm a cowboy after all.

I've seen some more too - but lost track cuz its been a while hehehe

i haven't gone to a concert in so long hahaha

I hardly listen to music that much anymore... but when I do - yep - it's about 70% country too hehehehe

and I am also a cowgirl at heart! wiiiiiiiide open spaaaaaaaces!!! LOL

My wife and I don't have too much difference in the music we like to listen to.
We have out favorite music and artists, so next to each other we fell in love with what we hadn't listened to before...
So I don't have challenges like you 🙂.
But, if wr were to write about movies... well, there would be another story and a long list...

There's not much my girl and I disagree on and with music only a few tracks, but I don't mind as it gives me something to torture her ears with! 🤣

I'm careful though, the torture she delivers is far worse than that which I deliver.

ahahah it's the same between me and my girl: we agree on almost everything, but when it comes to music we can barely find a track we both like! The only difference is that 99% of the times it's her choosing the music, so I guess that the ears tortured are mines 😂

Haha, I'm sorry for your tortured ears!

I'm pretty lucky that we like 98% of the same music, there's just a few that are not mutually liked...but that's ok...torture can be enjoyable...right? 🤣

I'd say that it depends ahahaha 😂😂😂 but luckily I can listen to almost everything - at least when talking about music lol - without caring too much, so in the end I let her choose everytime what she likes the most!

I listened to the songs you shared, and they are so different from each other that I don't know what your partner doesn't like with them. Is it maybe just the vibe she gets from the songs?

The vibe for sure. They don't resonate with her and no matter what other people think it won't make it so. I don't complain, it's not an issue, gave me something write a post about though huh?

I am very fortunate to have a similar taste in music as my husband. But he leans more toward the 70’s and I’m an 80s and 90’s gal when it comes to go-to rock play lists like for, say, background party music. If I drive his car, and he’s got the radio on one of those 70’s stations, I’ll change the channel. But we have friction around it.

One of my best friends plays only Motown at her house. I have realized that I could not live with her. It’s a fine genre, mind you. But it’s not my sound. I’m done after a few songs.

That’s just to illustrate that there are definite levels of tolerance one needs around the music taste of others! I think some music disagreements are just part of life, and others could cause a deep rift! I hope you two have the former situation, not the latter.

There's no rifts, a disagreement on a piece of music would never cause such a thing. There's a handful of tracks she doesn't like that I do and I think that's perfectly legitimate...just like we have different tastes in food or any other thing I suppose. We don't disagree on these things, we just have different tastes. I guess it's like a person on Hive who likes what my posts contain, how I write and present them, the photos and such...other people operate in their own sphere of interest like Splinterlands of mushrooms or some such thing; there's no right or wrong.

I'm with you on your Motown friend scenario though, I'd have to throttle her...in the nicest possible way of course.

Of course, that last comment isn't to be taken literally.

Of course! 😄 And thank you. I'm glad it's not just me. For the record, I think a bit of tête-à-tête is healthy in a relationship. You see those couples in restaurants, eating quietly side-by-side, not a word between them. I would much rather be arguing about music or literature or even politics than have that awful scenario on my hands!

Hi, my husband and I have similar musical tastes, like a singer I don't like very much but I tolerate him, what bothers me the most is the volume when listening to him, my ears screech and I have to leave the room, then poor my ears.

Haha, yes volume is something that can cause problems I guess, in my household too. Some compromise is required I guess, or ear muffs.

I remember similar experiences where I listened to a lot of rock or metal bands, but I had a girlfriend who didn't like them. She considered them bad influences because she grew up in an environment with a strong Christian influence. However, I managed to handle the situation and explain to her that the lyrics of those songs addressed reflective themes or expressed the personal experiences of the artists. Gradually, he began to notice the differences.

In terms of rhythm and musical progressions, she was more into other genres such as salsa, electronic music or ballads; while I was into rock and extreme or heavy metal. Fortunately, this did not become a problem in the long run, as we both recognized the creative value of musical artists.

I firmly believe that the creative effort artists make to communicate what is going on in the world is often underestimated. We should not limit ourselves to musical biases, but appreciate the quality and depth of their compositions.

After all, this musical difference was not something we were too concerned about in the long run. My former partner came to understand the importance of valuing and appreciating artistic work beyond our individual preferences.

As the popular saying goes in my country: "To taste, the colors". Ultimately, everyone has their own musical tastes and that is a natural and interesting part of our human diversity.

Relationships are about give and take and sometimes the balance leans one way or the other a little more; it's normal. I think what's important is that each person maintains their own identity rather than losing it to the other and having likes and dislikes that don't always align is part of that.

Thanks for your comment.

Control of the music goes to the driver. That is the rule we came up with long ago. Although it has never been much of a problem. She loves more modern pop and R&B type music, which I don't mind. I like almost any music, including old folk style music but she hates it. So as long as I stay away from it we are usually good. Occasionally when I have been sipping a little too much of the spirits, I throw on some Irish drinking music from the Clancy Brothers and it drives her nuts.

I agree, no one should touch the dials other than the driver, I'm fortunate that my girl plays along with that...I've gotten myself in trouble when in the shotgun seat a few times though, touching the dials. 😊

Lol on the Clancy Brothers...that's drive any woman mad I'd say.

Not sure if it’s the Clancy’s or me singing along in my worst Irish accent that drives her nuts the most😀

All the songs are different from each other, the second one I know because I saw the movie, the thing is when it plays non-stop hahaha.

I liked the last one quite a lot... I didn't know it before.

But both of us don't like rock, nor the traditional stuff from here like flamenco, we stay in the 80's and 70's too!

My partner and I are the same age so our tastes in music are not much different, we almost have the same tastes in music, from the rock band genre like My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, kinda music. and we both don't like today's music. So, when I read about your writing, I thought back and reflected, what is different about the two of us?

The first thing I discovered was that my partner was not really a "music kid" like me. I love music and he doesn't really like music, so basically he doesn't have a soul for art or music at all, like me. So when I'm at home or in the car, I'm the one who always plays a song first and sometimes I asked him why don't you play a song? it's very boring here, too quiet. hahaha

And after I thought for a long time, I think I found one music that I like and my partner doesn't like, Indian songs. I like Indian songs but some and not all, Shah Rukh Khan songs. and some from movie soundtracks such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai movie. He hates it, but the more he didn't like it, the more I turned it up loud. lol
Even I asked him to watch the movie and we watched it together :D

I'm with your partner on this onez I don't like Indian songs either, or Bollywood movies. It's ok for people to have their own likes and dislikes though, it shows personality and the world would be boring without it.

Yess, I knew it before you mentioned it. hahaha
Some of Bollywood is fine, some is not lols

It is truly okay. I agree with you, if we were all just the same it would be boring and whats life about? its too flat...

Well yeah relationships are always give and take. I haven't heard that first song before. The second one sounds like a soundtrack from Alias that I like better. Haha.

Btw I got a notification that you put a comment on my post but it seems it's gone now. Was wondering what you had to say abt the topic of my post. 🙂 Surprised you commented too but anyway if it's not a good comment then it's fine if you deleted it.

My wife and I share a lot of the same tastes in music for sure, but there are a few genres that I like where she just kind of checks out. Occasionally we will be driving on road trip and when she falls asleep I change the station to one of those genres. It never fails she wakes up a bit later and says "what the !%@#$ are we listening to?". I'm always fine changing the channel because there isn't much I don't care for.

It's a good way to keep the peace, changing stations and I'm a bit the same, I am generally ok with listening to everything with only a few exceptions.

While reading, I found myself laughing because I have a very similar situation with my partner. Our tastes couldn't be more different, well, we're also from different parts of the world. At first, it was difficult; every trip was a battle.

Over time, we learned that we'll never fully agree, so it's better to reach a compromise. We merged both playlists and put them on shuffle, so neither of us gets upset. In my case, it's the same as your partner's; it's hard for me to like the same things. My girlfriend is from the Middle East, and I don't even understand the language, though I enjoy the rhythms. It's challenging, but reaching an agreement was necessary for the sake of the car's skip button.

0

That may be an awkward situation although also an opportunity to expand one's musical interest. I listen to some world music now and then, Italian and French artists mainly, no middle eastern though.

I'm lucky that our musical interests pretty much align, and she's so easily going as a person which helps, but there's a few that rub the other up the wrong way - not many.

In your case, an agreement works, it's best to keep the peace with the ladies, their retribution can be too much to accept. 🤔

it's best to keep the peace with the ladies.

You know what you're talking about 😅

In my case, discovering new rhythms, singers, melodies is an adventure, even though I don't understand the lyrics, everything else is enjoyable. At first, it was challenging, but it has been achieved; you could say it's been a rollercoaster ride (well, in this case, from the Middle East 😅)

With time, I believe the same relationship adjusts, and those little things get resolved on their own, well, at least in my experience (although I still have a lot to learn).
