A war of classics

I find that classical music helps put me in a place that is very calming and allows me to express emotion through my body.

fuck off cunt face.png

I often listen to classical music which I find relaxing and a nice change from music with lyrics; the lack of lyrics leaves one free to find emotions and feelings gained through the subtle nuances of the music itself. As someone who grew up with classical music, listening to it and playing it on the piano, I appreciate the way such music is crafted and the way each element links to the others, the way it intertwines, and yet how each part still maintains its own identity.

Today I'm sharing three classical music pieces that I very much like. Each of them feature in very powerful war movies which I also value (and have seen many times) and when I hear these pieces of music I'm instantly taken to those powerful images in the movies. It's easy to determine what those movies are, but I wonder if any of you were able to name the movies without cheating and looking them up? (Although one is listed in the name of the YouTube link).

Track one composed by Williams

Track three composed byWagner

Track two composed byBarber

✳️ Here's a link to YouTube where you'll find all three in a single YouTube playlist.

I enjoy having a broad musical interest as there's so much great music out there I'd miss if I was to limit myself to only a single or a few genres. I'm open to anything; if it sounds good and makes me feel something then I'm interested. I discard a lot of music as not interesting to me, but I'm not a music snob...I like what I like and I don't care who made it or the genre it sits in.

Do you like classical music and if so, what's one piece of music you really like and why? Feel free to share in the comments below, it might even put something on my radar that wasn't previously there.

Classical music draw my soul to a whole new universe, but I really love classical music with strings. Wow your this one by William is soul settling, so gentle and melodious. I feel like I'm getting rid of all the troubles out there in life.

Thanks for the three suggestions @galenkp ,you chose nicely.

It's often very relaxing and can be quite moving also, emotionally I mean. Do you have any particular favourites yourself?

I miss the time when we use to put a CD and listen all the album.
My favourite ones were Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart. And the New Age music: Yanni (almost a Wishper, in my time...), André Gagnon.
Thank you for making alive those moments @galenkp

I am sure you never heard of Indian classical, which used to be ore of musical instrument like sitar, or tabla. It does helps in peace of mind. Talking about other classical music then I find them more meaningful than latest hip-hop or raps or jazz..

I've heard of the sitar and have heard it played. It's not a bad sound at all, but looks hard to play, all that tapping of those strings.

I agree with you, classical music is often far better than much of the modern music.

One classical piece I absolutely love is Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." It's just magical! The way the piano gently plays those soft and sad notes soothes my heart and mind. I enjoy having it played in the background when I'm reading or just unwinding in the night before bed 😁

Thanks for sharing the 3 pieces, I shall add them to my playlist 😅

Beethoven knew what was up, one of my favourite composers. I feel the same way about that composition as you do and your use of it is similar to mine...lovely music indeed.

I'm glad you liked these three I listed, well-worthy of the play list I'd say. :)

I am not a lover of classical music. But sometimes, I listen to vocal classical music by NFAK. He was a great pakistani singer. You might have heard of him.
Coming towards these 3 tracks I liked the
track one and three.

I like a lot of music so my taste is varied, as I have said in the post and I try not to use the words, I do not like, in reference to any genre of music, I like or dislike music on its individual merits. I'm glad you found 66% of the tracks I listed to be agreeable.

Have you ever tried to sing or tried any musical instrument?

I started learning to play the piano at four and a half years old and did all my grades so I am qualified to teach the piano.

I also played the trumpet for several years and the bass guitar, both in in a jazz band.

If yes, then how well you are?

I'm very good at playing the piano, the other two...just average I guess, but I get by.

How about you?

The one by Barber I recognize, but can't place the movie right now.

Like you, I enjoy all genres if it sounds good to me. Everything from classical to old style folks music to heavy metal. It just depends on my modd most times. The one time I used to listen to classical the most was my last job on the drive home from work. I had about an hour drive, so would listen to it to mello me out as much as possible before I got home after a bad day.

The one by Barber I recognize, but can't place the movie right now.

Platoon was the movie. (Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe etc.)

The Wagner is from Apocalypse Now and Williams is from Saving Private Ryan.

Driving home is an excellent time to listen to classical music, a sort of gap between the work-life you and home-life you...I've done the same for years although I listen to podcasts too.

I definitely recognized the other two and the movies. Just couldn't place the Barber. Platoon was a good movie as well. I used to listen to audiobooks when not listening to classical.

I never got into audiobooks to be honest, I'm not sure why, I guess I like reding at my own pace (which is fast) and having the chance to flick back pages, read something slowly or whatever. Audiobooks are the way of the (present and) future though huh?

Sorry, I didn't realize you'd recognised the other two movies...I'm a little occupied with something today and am not 100% focused on Hive. Sorry mate.

I am not into digital stuff much either. I would just do audiobooks for when I would drive. I am old school books, magazines, and newspapers still as well.

In classical music every word contains pure music of emotions. Classical music appeals the emotions and reminds nostalgic memories of the past.

Music, I remember it for what it makes me feel when I enjoy the baroque of Bach, Handel, Rameau...

I also love the creative energy of the music that gives, heals like Beethoven's ninth symphony.

For me, classical music is the pinnacle of the Arts, and being with Beauty gives me happiness, listening to it has been wonderful and has given me a deep feeling of happiness, throughout my life Galen, is an immense work of art.

Thanks to my daddy, who opened this great world to me when I was a child, so many Artists create these jewels of pure delight.

I know people who would never listen to classical music, they tend to limit themselves to one or two genres only, and I think it's very closed-minded. Music is a wonder, something that can be so powerful and meaningful and, for me at least, I want experience as much as I can. I'm only here for a short time, it makes sense to fully immerse in it (life) and have as many experiences as possible.

I think you're the same, especially considering your previous health issues, and I'm not surprised you love classical music.

You would be surprised at the things I love to do and that I like since I was a child, I am a musician, I play classical guitar and in my family, I have a brother who is a concert performer, and it is something that is carried in my family DNA, and thanks to her, she has helped me overcome my health circumstances, which thank God is under control.

That music connects with my sensitivity, it makes my pores burst with that joy, and they are a miraculous cure that sweetens my soul. Thanks for this post...

Have a peaceful evening, my dear Galen.

I love classical music! My best friend, who is like my sister plays the piano, and the guitar and loves it too.

All three pieces are wonderful, really good, excellent!!!!

But I must tell you that you chose one that touches me very deeply... the last one is the one that makes me feel so many emotions, I could never listen to it without crying.

You know I like epic orchestral music that starts from the classical, but in its origin I love the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, Mozart, Paganini, Vivaldi, Chopin, among others.

There are too many of them that I like I leave you a very beautiful one!

And here's one that I sometimes listen to in the background while I'm designing, I love it! But it's more modern.

Thanks Galen, super cool post!

Lovely music you left here, thank you.

I'm not sure you're aware, but I also play the piano as mentioned in another comment in this post. It's been one of those things in my life that has provided a mixture of benefits and enjoyment. Yes, as a kid I sometimes didn't want to sit for an hour or two for my practice but it was a big part of my life and is partly why music means so much to me now.

I'm glad you liked the tracks I chose this week and thanks for commenting with your own.

I found the comment .... I didn't know it! I want pictures of that piano, if you can, of course.

It is relaxing and very beautiful, I loved listening to my friend playing it, sometimes I ask her to record it and send it to me, now we are 12,000 km away.

Now I understand the importance of both music and nature. People with great sensitivity.

Thank you!

Very nice selections! I have a couple of playlists for when I am working in my office that contain Jazz, classical, or instrumental music. I have a Spanish guitar playlist that is one of my absolute favorites. I also really dig elevator music. I know it gets a bad rap, but most days when I am driving into work alone I put that on. I love hearing the instrumental covers of pop classics. Sometimes the vocals aren't needed.

The lyrics can get in the way I think, the mind focuses on that rather than the actual music sometimes. There's a lot to be said for really listening to the music itself and allowing it to speak in ways that sometimes words cannot.

Oh, you play the piano! 😌 Everytime I know someone can play a musical instrument, I feel happy for them. Gosh, I wanted to learn to play the piano so badly when I was little, but that's a long story.

I'm fascinated by all three pieces you bring to the table, though Ride of the Valkyries has a special place in my heart; it's an icon that connects classic and pop culture. I love it.

My interest in classical music grew significantly in 1996, when I took elective course: History of Music. Our professor was a Historian and English teacher whose first language was French, so I remember what he taught us with a French accent 😁 There I was able to listen to some pieces by Teresa Carreño, Venezuelan composer and pianist prodigy of the 19th century (she also sang and conducted); I like everything she composed. La cesta de flores Basket of Flowers, for example, makes me smile no matter what. With my professor's guidance, I got to know all of Brahms' Hungarian dances; until then I only knew No. 5. I fell in love with No. 1 and No. 4. I also like the work of Ennio Morricone in Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso and Tarantino'sThe Hateful Eight.

As the hand tunes an instrument until the ear is pleased, so music tunes my spirit. I could list musical pieces all day long. I'm addicted to music, I guess mostly classical, since that's what I play most at home, but my musical taste is super eclectic. I choose different music for different activities, but the sublime intricacies of classical music always get me.

I can tell you're a lover of classical music and I'm sure you find great value in it as do I. My parents were hugely into classical music and I grew up with it from a young age; when I started to learn the piano it was beyond me but as my skills improved I enjoyed playing the classics which made me feel a little close to them and those who created them. I played many other pieces of music also, and still do (I have my own piano of course), however it was classical music (even more modern classical music) that I love the best.

Well, parents are key to the education of our musical taste. Mine would not allow us to play much music at home. We were six kids making all kinds of noise in a small house; silence was/is a family value. But I did get to "play with" the strings of a cuatro my eldest sister was learning to play, and I also played my little toy piano by ear, never by reading; I didn't know how. I might learn to play the guitar some day when I don't have to work two jobs--and a half. I think I'm too old for piano already. I should learn to play whatever musical instrument when I have the time. My son's guitar is hanging on the wall; he had to leave it when he left the country... Should I have the skill and patience.

The guitar is a good instrument and a little more easy to get than a piano I guess. It's a good option.

A pianist! That is incredible. And yet not surprising. But I am surprised. Should I be? Classical music is in a symphony of its own. Some of my favourite experiences are in front of an orchestra. I also love classical music ..... "the lack of lyrics leaves one free to find emotions and feelings gained through the subtle nuances of the music itself...."

Yep, many years of playing the piano. I've never made a secret if it, there's several posts in which I've mentioned it, but I don't make a big deal of it either. There's many aspects of my life I don't share here, some things must remain private.

It's good to hear you like classical music too, so many do not, but I feel it's such a valuable part of my musical journey.

Isn't it amazing how these pieces of music can reach inside and take hold? Music has that ability anyway, but there's something so deep and emotional about classical music. I can only imagine what it must have been like for those people back when these were first composed and performed, people whose world was far more closed than ours is, and how it must have made them feel.

Thanks for sharing, it's a great piece.

Yes, guess its the language our soul speaks?
A world without music at our fingertip everywhere and then listening a concert. Must be like watching a firework!
Maybe they made more homemusic themselves. And singing! When was the last time you heard someone simply singing or whistling? 🤔 The only one I remember is an african rubbish man who sometimes sings when they drive by.
Maybe I am wrong, but think some decades ago there was more spontainous singing to hear.

Greetings from my morning coffee while listening to the Chopin waltz. 🙂

Y'know, over half my vinyl collection is classical (and I'm referring to 33 1/3rpm vinyl, not 78rpm shellac). A lot of that is Mozart by various ensembles. I've also got a sizeable chunk of Canadian Brass, which plays a little bit of everything.

Some of my most favourite pieces, though, are on 78rpm shellac. Some of the old recordings by the Philadelphia Orchestra when led by Leopold Stokowski still stand the test of time.

I figured, if you saw this, you'd say something like what you have, it comes as no surprise.

For me the key is variety and not discounting something that reaches inside just because it's a genre I may not actually like. If it sounds good and makes me feel something, it is good.

Yeah, I'm a pretty transparent person.

I used to have a large collection of Rolling Stones albums in college. Sadly, they - along with the rest of my vinyl collection - did not make the transit east with me when I crossed the country. We used to have some great parties with those records. My collection now is of a decidedly different bent, I'll admit.

I have the same feelings about visual art; if it does not make the audience feel something, then it hasn't achieved it's goal or purpose.

The good old days of having to change the record so the party can continue...I miss those simple times.

For a long time I didn't appreciate Classical music, like you I would listen to any (almost) genre, but two that never made it to my ears of collection were classical and country and western.

That has certainly changed though, and I love classical music now, albeit I don't listen to it a huge amount, when I do I can immerse myself happily in it for hours.

A few that stand out in my mind would be Pachelbel - Canon In D Major, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Symphony No. 5. There is a Shostakovich one as well, can't remember the name, but quite like it too.

I think there's room within a person for many different styles of music and if they are given a go, a person can find something to like, mostly. There's exceptions of course, I have them too, but generally speaking there's something to like.

You mention some legit musical pieces all of which I like and one of which has some quite significant meaning to me.

Ya I think you are right that there's room within people for lots of styles of music and I guess we all mature in different ways along the way. I used to hate vegetables as a child, love them now. I would not go near spicy food pre 20 years of age, no I seek it out and love it. I guess music is the same and it can take a while to warm to certain genres or appreciate them.
