2020 and beyond
This week in 2020 guitarist and founder of rock band Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, died at the age of sixty five. I'm not exactly sure but he seems to have led a full life, raised a family, achieved his goals, and created something that will endure long after his passing, his music.
Van Halen formed in 1972, when I was two years old, and it wasn't until 1983 I became Van Halen-aware as I was exploring my musical interests as a young teenager.
In 1984 I bought my first vinyl record with money I'd earned at my first job which I started the year prior, it was the Van Halen album called, 1984 (MCMLXXXIV), of course. You can see that very album above in a photo I took today thirty nine years after having purchased it. The cover is a little worn and tattered and it's well-travelled, (like me I guess), but it's as important to me today as it was the day I bought it.
I loved that album, loved it a lot, and immediately began to collect their past albums on vinyl switching to compact discs when they became available; I can't recall exactly but I think Van Halen was the first compact disk I bought also and now I have an extensive Spotify playlist of the band which gets regular play-time.
Their music meant a lot to me over the years: Powerful lyrics and strong vocals, heavy drums, keyboards and of course Eddie Van Halen on the guitar...certainly one of the best guitarists of his time...and probably even still now if he was alive.
They knew how to put a song together be it rock or a ballad and they had fun doing it. I found their tracks meaningful, the music and lyrics reached inside me in times of need and tempered me, brought detachment from what I was doing at the time, and to this day it has that effect when I listen to the band.
Today, in honour of Eddie Van Halen, I thought it would be appropriate to share some of their tracks. If you give them a listen drop a comment about them below if you're keen to do so.

Okay, but the real question is, which front man do you prefer? I honestly like them both, but I give a slight edge to Hagar. Poundcake is maybe my most favorite song. I have that album on vinyl too! I also have 5150. They just released a Van Halen box set on vinyl. I got to see Sammy perform a couple of years ago. It was amazing. Sorry, I know that was a bit all over the place!
I prefer Sammy Hagar, purists will disagree of course. I found David Lee Roth to be too flashy and showy, it's not my way and I don't respond well to it. I also think Hagar's voice is a little more raw and gritty. That doesn't mean I don't like the Roth years though.
I'm looking into getting a Bluetooth turntable soon, been looking for a while, and I'll e playing all my old vinyl, and getting more. :)
It's addictive so be careful! Between records, crypto, and whisky, I have some expensive habits. I agree with you on Roth. He does have a few songs that really stand out though.
I know, I have been told that by a few...I'm trying to find the right thing, I want one that I can connect to my Bluetooth speaker and external speakers if I want also, and something good quality, but not outrageously costly, a good upper-middle quality unit will work. I've found a couple, just narrowing it down.
Audio technica makes some good stuff. If I were to buy a new table I would probably get one of those.
That's one I have considered. I only want to buy once, so want the right thing first off.
Understandable!
Wow I remember that terrible news, when they announced that he died of throat cancer,
everyone was saying that he was a great innovator with the guitar, one of the first songs I remember was Hot For Teacher, the guitar solo is something great, when I saw the list you are posting, I went straight to listen to that song, just because I remembered.
Yeah, not a good way to go I guess, if there even is a good way.
That's a great song, I remember hearing it on the album for the first time...played that track way too many times, and yet, never enough.
You downvote and send @abh12345, @hyun-soo, @whangster79, @adamada, @bestofph, @anonymous02, @gollumkp to downvote my comments here and here:
because of asking ? about these:
What is wrong with you?
My downvotes are on trail but if I had to guess, your inquiry wasn't taken as a joke or even a serious question.
It wasn't taken as a joke, or a question...because no question was asked.
Thanks. Seems like many assumptions were made. Question was meant seriously, been holding off on asking until recent.
You didn't ask, you dropped an image taken from a post of mine simply circling a file name.
Had you asked about it directly I'd have said it's none of your business what my file names are. But you didn't ask, just persisted with your creepy image-dropping.
None of your business blacktones.
Lot of assumptions on your part. Seems like you don't know or aren't able to read punctionation such question marks in the comment. I can't help you with either of those.
It's no longer necessary that you answer. It's obvious that below your superficial show you are a vindictive person filled with rage and hate, easily provoked at the tiniest perceived slight and using it as an excuse to lash out at whomever.
You're wasting all these downvotes of yours and others on my comments which just underlines exactly what you are and what your agenda is. Pathetic, infantile behaviour.
Just so you know...for someone talking about punctuation and reading...well, you spelled punctuation wrong.
Oh wow, jeez, ya hear it on HIVE! I didn't know. I was never really into Van Halen but he certainly made a mark and I reckon a lot of people will be listening with equally fond memories this week. He was a bit of a spunk though wasn't he, prowling over the stage like a demi god.
It certainly makes sense you didn't know if you're not into the band and yeah, I think a few will be playing the bands music in memory for sure, myself included.
Having a quick squiz at his tunes, there's so many that are sooo familiar - like, we all know these songs! The funny thing is, there's quite a few there that randomly get stuck in my head sometimes - like Jump. It's interesting when someone dies - you end up knowing a lot more about them than you did when they were alive sometimes!
Damn, Jump is in my head now hahahah...
Light for Van Halen, wherever he may be. I know he have it in the same way he illuminated with his music and powerful lyrics the lives of many, including you.
Jump and Not enough are my favorites from that playlist.
;)
Music has a way of lifting a person in ways other things may not be able to manage as well, Van Halen has done that for me, among many other artists and music also.
Not enough, is one of my all timer faves! Of course, Jump also...the very first Van Halen track I ever heard.
😇 Time to bed for me.
A little while ago my head started to hurt a lot (I took an acetaminophen) and now I don't know if it's because I'm going to start a migraine or if it's from staring at the laptop.
Too much screen time isn't good. Sleep is though.
The great lines that will ever remain even after one is far gone is that of music and books, I do appreciate the fact that good music stand the test of time.
I agree, it's nice to be able to look back through words and music right?
Yeahhh!!
Music being considered as life, talk more of the good ones. It lives
Love Jump song.
You could hear it all the time on the radio when I was a teenager. It may be cause I"m getting old but 80's and 90's bands seem to last way more than today's ones.
Music is so manufactured these days, I think back a while it was more in the hands of the artist who created it rather than simply performed it. I'm not saying all current music is like that, but I tend to find most of is quite empty and soulless.
Not just music, most products today are manufactured to last only a few years to force us to consume more and more every day. Industries tend to think of "quick" live cycle products instead of long-lasting ones.
Oh yeah, indeed...humans really have it worked out huh? (That's sarcasm.) 🤔 🙄
I love to learn about old artistes even though they are late because I'm a music freak
I'd check more about the person
No worries. It's probably not your style of music though.

Well, I haven't listened to this one but when I listened to the playlist I got to know why you like it really much.
I liked Not enough, love walks in and from afar. It was worth listening 🎧.
Most will never listen to all thirteen tracks and that's ok. Some will hate them all or find one they like. It doesn't negate the fact the artist out his life and soul into creating music and that it will endure, and I think that's something to celebrate.
Yup, this effort by the artist adds to the diversity and richness of the music world.
What a powerful voice! And the guitarist is magnificent!
I've listened to the band a few times, I'm not a super fan but I've listened to them especially Jump and Hot for Teacher. I also like Not Enough, this one I really liked a lot.
How young Eddie has gone, very young. He has founded an excellent band that will last in time, a lot of history and trajectory.
I loved this tribute you made to him, very good songs selected.
And you have the original album, how great!
I put the playlist on and it's still playing as I write this comment, very nice. Thank you very much!
I understand that this music won't be liked by everyone and I made the post without the intention of anyone liking it to be honest. I like it though and that's what matters. I think it's good to give different music a listen, without listening how would we know if it's likeable or not?
That's what I say, the important thing is that you like it and enjoy it. There's a lot of music I don't know and it's nice to know about it. So one can acquire or not other tastes and styles.
Have a great Thursday! Here I am going to walk the kitty hahahaha
I'm off to the gun range to shoot some stuff...should be a good day. Enjoy your walk.
Have a great time!
Good night, see you tomorrow!
Thank you for sharing these music. I wasn't a big fan of their music, but I do know how big their contribution to music is. They had incredible passion and their numerous fans are always there to support them. It is sad that he passed at such a young-ish age, but I think he lived life to the fullest.
We are all different and it makes sense that we all like various music, and not all the same.
Music being a universal doesn't have an age limit. Even the unborn children like and enjoy music so much that even when they are born they never forget the music they liked and enjoyed when they were unborn.
When an owl walks the path of the tiger it knows no limits on the sandy beaches of the moon's magnificent omnipotence.
Indeed,
I just heard Love walks in . Believe me when I was listening to it I was assuming myself that I am walking in a forest and I am listening this masterpiece.
I didn't yet heard other pieces of his work. But after listening just one I can imagine that he is unmatchable in his field.
It's not music everyone will like we're all different after all, but I think there's some good sounds.
I read this early in the day, but didn't have time to comment at the time. To celebrate, I had my Alexa play Van Halen this afternoon while I worked.
When I was growing up most of my music came from the radio because it was free, so at least I got exposed to lots of different music. I "think" my first album ever was Deep Purple... In Rock. I never had many albums, but I did have a Chicago album. I'd probably recognize the cover, but I can't remember the name.
After Van Halen I listened to KC and The Sunshine Band 😂
I like Chicago, gread band really, nice sounds. KC and the sunshine band...I only know one of their tracks that I can recall, an upbeat one called give it up, or something like that.
Yeah... Chicago was the bomb back in the day.
As for KC, they were mostly disco and funk. Most of their songs are funly energizing.
Waoooo!!!! If you are a fan of this band, having the first album you bought from them after 39 years is a symbol of how important and transcendental their music has been in your life. I don't know their songs, but you have definitely awakened my curiosity.
What a great tribute you have presented @galenkp
Thanks for commenting, maybe you'll listen to some songs from this band o maybe not, either way I hope you have a nice week.
I know how much you love them, it's always quite heartbreaking when a musical legend shuffles off the mortal coil and goes on to play with all the others in that realm. I've listened to some of their music over the years and they are still a brilliant band. Well done on keeping that vinyl all that time and looking after it - my mom had a vast collection of vinyl and she was meticulous about keeping them safe. They were kept in a very sturdy case under a work top, out of warpy sunlight and dust.
Yeah, it's a long tome to keep something I guess, but I tend to look after my things; I'm a little annoyed the cover is a bit ragged but I suppose that just shows use...I certainly played that record enough times!
Why am I always the weirdo that likes the song not on the list..?
They're all good, it would have been a long list if I put them all on it. I knew those who liked Van Halen would have their own favourite that may not be on the list.
