When I go for a walk downtown, or somewhere in my city, there are few stores or stores that I can feel excitement or a great desire to enter to see what they sell.

There are two types of stores that make me feel those things, one is the stores where they sell products to make jewelry and crafts; another one is the stores where they sell musical instruments. Today I will tell you about the second one.

Cuando salgo a pasear por el centro, o por algún lugar de mi ciudad, hay pocas tiendas o locales por los que puedo sentir emoción o un gran deseo de entrar para ver lo que venden.

Hay dos tipos de locales que me hacen sentir esas cosas, uno son las tiendas donde venden productos para hacer bisutería y manualidades; otro son las tiendas donde venden instrumentos musicales. Hoy les hablaré del segundo.

You see, in my city there is only one store where they sell these instruments and if I remember correctly they only have two or three among the bunch of things they sell, little else.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Caracas again and while walking down one of its streets I came across one of these stores. I didn't hesitate and went in right away.

Verán, en mi ciudad hay una sola tienda donde venden estos instrumentos y si mal no recuerdo solo tienen dos o tres entre el montón de cosas que venden, poco más.

Hace poco tuve la oportunidad de visitar Caracas otra vez y mientras iba por una de sus calles me encontré con una de estas tiendas. No lo dudé y entré al instante.

To be quite honest, when I walk into a musical instrument store I feel like a child entering a toy store, or a monk entering a temple if you want a less childish example.

It is certainly exciting to see in person instruments that are unusual to me. For example, in this store I saw some bandolas. They are stringed instruments similar to the Venezuelan Cuatro, but they are played differently. They are really beautiful and not as common as the Cuatro itself.

Para serles muy sincero, cuando entro a una tienda de instrumentos musicales me siento como si fuese un niño entrando en una juguetería, o como un monje entrando a un templo si quieren un ejemplo menos infantil.

Es ciertamente emocionante ver en persona instrumentos que para mi son poco comunes. Por ejemplo, en esta tienda vi unas bandolas. Son instrumentos de cuerda parecidos al Cuatro Venezolano, pero se tocan de manera distinta. Son realmente hermosos y no son tan comunes como el mismo Cuatro.

There were a lot of the latter, some very nice and with really beautiful finishes, as well as some simpler and without so much adornment. I guess there is something for everyone.

But even, along with the Cuatros, there was a huge traditional harp, making an exhibition along with a pair of maracas. A small ensemble of these beautiful instruments.

De este último habían un montón, unos muy lindos y con acabados realmente hermosos, así como también unos más sencillos y sin tanto adorno. Imagino que hay para todo.

Pero es que incluso, junto con los Cuatros, había una enorme arpa tradicional, haciendo una exhibición junto a un par de maracas. Un pequeño ensamble de estos bellísimos instrumentos.

Of course I also came across some beautiful guitars. These had unusual and very striking designs.

They were not the conventional designs that one can find in a classical guitar, as they had colors such as pink, a white gradient with yellow, red and black. You can see them in the picture below. They were unusual, but beautiful.

Desde luego también me encontré con unas bellísimas guitarras. Estas tenían diseños poco comunes y muy llamativos.

No eran los diseños convencionales que uno puede encontrar en una guitarra clásica, pues lucían colores como el rosado, un blanco degradado con amarillo, rojo y negro. Pueden verlos en la fotografía de abajo. Eran poco comunes, pero hermosas.

Already when I find myself with an electric guitar I think that I always had a frustrated dream with this instrument. I'm not very good at playing guitar, but I always wanted to play an electric guitar to see what it felt like to play this instrument.

Even if I didn't know how to play it very well, it would have been great to play it, to make a simple song with it and to make music with such a mythical instrument. I remember that when I saw these ones in the pictures below, I stood in front of them admiring them, while I meditated on what I have just told you.

Ya al encontrarme con una guitarra eléctrica pienso en que siempre tuve un sueño frustrado con este instrumento. No soy muy bueno tocando guitarra, pero siempre quise tocar una eléctrica a ver qué se sentía tocar este instrumento.

Aunque no supiera tocarla del todo bien, habría sido genial eso, tocarla, hacer una canción sencilla con esta y en definitiva hacer música con tan mítico instrumento. Recuerdo que cuando vi estas que están en las fotografías de abajo, me quedé de pie frente a estas admirándolas, mientras meditaba en esto que les acabo de comentar.

I don't know if it happens to you, but when I see these guitars I can't help but think of those great rock artists. The shapes of the guitars themselves evoke those memories of numerous video clips that I got to see on TV during long hours of the night.

The percussion instruments themselves also make me think of this, just seeing the drums makes me think immediately of a rock concert, or at least it does for me...

No sé si les pasa, pero al ver estas guitarras no puedo evitar pensar en esos grandes artistas del rock. Las mismas formas de las guitarras evocan esos recuerdos de numerosos videoclips que llegué a ver en TV durante largas horas de la noche.

Los propios instrumentos de percusión también me hacen pensar en esto, es que con solo ver la batería uno ya piensa inmediatamente en un concierto de rock, o al menos a mi me pasa...

On the other hand, the drums bring back another kind of memory, a quieter one that goes back to my childhood. In those days I loved to play drums, so much so that once I was going to participate in a concert for the school playing some drums.

I was really good, but more than talent, what I had was a great stage fright. So even though I was very good at drumming, my nervousness prevented me from playing and in the end I couldn't play in that concert, kid stuff.

Por otra parte, los tambores traen a mi otra clase de recuerdos, unos más tranquilos que se remontan a mi niñez. En esos tiempos a mi me encantaba tocar tambor, tanto que una vez iba a participar en un concierto para la escuela tocando unos tamborcitos.

Realmente era bueno, pero más que talento, lo que yo tenía era un gran miedo escénico. Así que a pesar de ser muy bueno tocando tambor, mi nerviosismo me lo impidió y al final no pude tocar en ese concierto, cosas de niño.

But do you realize how a simple instrument can take you back to those beautiful memories that happened so long ago? That's the beauty of instruments...

¿Pero se dan cuenta de cómo un simple instrumento puede llevarte a esos recuerdos tan lindos que sucedieron hace tanto tiempo? Es la belleza de los instrumentos...
