Would you rather be a salaried musician? Guess that would make it easier because you know your income.
I am a salaried consultant, had some thoughts about trying this as a freelancer but never had the guts to try it out.
I guess I do prefer the security of being backed by a company.

No... I see the salaried musicians, and there are different pitfalls. These is the long slow decline into complacency... and not being able to do lots of different and interesting projects because you are attached permanently to a single orchestra.
On the other hand... steady income, holidays, and all that good stuff...
