Today would have been your 80th birthday, dear George. It's something he kept repeating to me, as I write these lines, on 25 February 2023. I don't know if he would have continued making music, or if he would have remained in the artistic world, composing or creating riffs and melodies as was usual for a genius like him. But what I am convinced of is that the world would have been infinitely better for that fact that never happened. All we know today is that in November 2001, Harrison passed away after a long battle with cancer, which finally won him over and deprived us of such a mystical, noble soul, full of special sensitivity.
However, his essence as a human being is perhaps the best of his characteristics, and ironically the least known of all. Pattie Boyd, a beautiful, blonde, green-eyed woman and the muse who inspired Harrison to compose "Something", The Beatles' legendary love ballad, was for many, many years the love of this fantastic artist's life. He undoubtedly loved her madly. He always kept his privacy at bay and well away from the camera flashes that so often followed the Fab Fours' every move. However, what he would have to experience is something I have rarely seen in my life. Especially in someone like him, and in the society in which he had to live...
Hoy habrías cumplido 80 años, querido George. Es algo que no dejó de repetirme, mientras escribo estas líneas, un 25 de febrero pero de 2023. No sé si habría continuado haciendo música, o si hubiera seguido dentro del mundo artístico, componiendo o creando riffs y melodías como era habitual en un genio como él. Pero de lo que sí estoy convencido es que el mundo habría sido infinitamente mejor por ese hecho que jamás sucedió. Todo hoy sabemos, que en noviembre de 2001, Harrison falleció a causa de un larga batalla contra el cáncer, que finalmente terminó ganándole y privándonos de un alma tan mística, noble, y llena de sensibilidad especial.
No obstante, su esencia como ser humano es quizá la mejor de sus características, e irónicamente la menos conocida de todas. Pattie Boyd, una mujer bella, rubia, de ojos verdes y la musa que inspiró a Harrison a componer "Something", la mítica canción balada de amor de The Beatles, fue durante muchísimo años el amor de la vida de este fantástico artista. Él, sin lugar a dudas la amaba con locura. Siempre mantuvo su intimidad a raya y bien lejos de los flashes de las cámaras, que tan a menudo seguían cualquier movimiento de los Fab Fours. Sin embargo, lo que tendría que experimentar es algo que muy pocas veces he visto en la vida. Sobre todo, en alguien como él, y en la sociedad en la que tuvo que vivir...
His best friend, also a famous guitarist, a certain Eric Clapton, in a completely secret way and with Pattie's obvious participation, maintained a deceitful relationship with George Harrison. Intimately, he made George believe that he was only his friend while he was having an affair with his girlfriend (Boyd). This shattered the silent Beatle, and kept him erratic and distant for a prolonged period of his separation from the Liverpool band. Yet how he dealt with what happened to him is as incredible as it is noble. Instead of hating and despising his friend's (Clapton's) betrayal of him, he put it behind him and became his friend again, even collaborating together on multiple musical projects....
Su mejor amigo, también guitarrista y famoso, un tal Eric Clapton de modo completamente secreto y con evidente participación de Pattie, mantuvo una relación de engaño para con George Harrison. Íntimamente, hacía creer a George, que sólo era su amigo mientras sostenía amoríos con su novia (Boyd). Este hecho destrozó al Beatle silencioso, y lo mantuvo errático y distante durante un período prolongado de su separación de la banda de Liverpool. Aún así, el cómo digirió lo que le sucedió es algo tan increíble como noble. It is worth noting that all this was at a time when Harrison was able to settle down again with a partner, the one who would end up being his wife and mother of his children, the incomparable Olivia Harrison. Who, unlike all his previous partners, rebuilt George in such a strong way, that she simply reversed the whole shaky path he had been on. But this anecdote is only an ephemeral and simple part of the human greatness of this individual. In my view, George Harrison was the real musical Beatles. He was a virtuoso, a gifted one. He could make a great song in just a few minutes. There was no riff, musical arrangement, accompaniment or solo that was too difficult or seemed too much for him.
Part of his greatness was in the role he played. Perhaps a bit of a supporting cast, for my taste, but what he did could only be understood if we really paid attention to the music made by John, Paul, Ringo and George. He made a song like "Roll Over Beethoven" even better than its original version. He made poetry about guitars that "wept" in direct analogy to human emotions. He introduced the world of Eastern philosophy to the greatest band in history, and if that wasn't enough, his musical and spiritual contributions and his mere influence is, from my perspective, the cornerstone for the geniuses McCartney and Lennon, together with him and the brilliant Starr, to make the best concept album in history: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Cabe destacar que todo esto, fue en un momento donde Harrison pudo establecerse de nuevo con una pareja, la que terminaría siendo su esposa y madre de sus hijos, la inigualable Olivia Harrison. Que a diferencia de todas sus parejas anteriores, reconstruyó a George de un modo tan fuerte, que sencillamente enrumbó todo el camino tambaleante que éste venía sosteniendo. Pero esta anécdota es sólo una parte efímera y simple de la grandeza humana de este individuo. Desde mi punto de vista, George Harrison era el verdadero Beatles musical. Era un virtuoso, un dotado. Podía realizar un temazo en tan sólo unos minutos. No había riffs, arreglo musical, acompañamiento o solo que se le dificultara o que pareciese demasiado para él.
Parte de su grandeza estaba en el rol que supo desenvolver. Quizá algo de reparto, para mi gusto, pero lo que hacía sólo podía entenderse si realmente prestamos atención a la música hecha por John, Paul, Ringo y George. Volvió una canción como "Roll Over Beethoven" un tema aún mejor que su versión original. Hizo poesía sobre guitarras que "lloraban" en directa analogía a las emociones humanas. Introdujo al mundo de la filosofía oriental a la banda más grande de la historia, y por si fuera poco, sus aportes musicales, espirituales y su mera influencia, es desde mi perspectiva, la piedra angular para que los genios de McCartney Y Lennon, junto a él y al genial Starr pudieron hacer el mejor álbum conceptual de la historia: Sgt. Pepper 's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
And what about his majestic career as a solo artist and visionary? In McCartney's own words, George Harrison learned that the business of music was in the actual production of music. So, he founded his own record company, thus having absolute control of the music he made. Whether on his own, as a solo artist, for musical compositions or in collaborations. Esto marcó a la banda pero el que halló una mejor solución a un problema grave, fue precisamente el sujeto protagonista de este post.
Ahora bien, del chico que en la década del 50's dejaba boquiabierto a Paul McCartney, aún siendo dos años menos de que éste, y que en el "Cavern Club", daba junto a su compañeros de banda los primeros pasos de una historia que aún genera libros, documentales, series, investigaciones, debates y cualquier cosa relacionada con la admiración más genuina de todas, pasamos a su legado inolvidable. Donde la pasión, la magia de sus recursos artísticos y el talento que desarrolló por la música, hizo que aún a más de 22 de años de su muerte, todavía lo recordemos y admiremos fervientemente.
