Review: Horse Cult - Day Dreams & Night Mares

Das Album "Day Dreams & Night Mares" von Horse Cult ist eine interessante Auseinandersetzung mit dem Neofolk-Genre, die sich über 13 teils sehr unterschiedliche Stücke streckt. Der Einsatz von weiblichen Harmoniegesängen und traditionellen Folkinstrumenten schafft eine mystische und folkloristische Atmosphäre auf dem Album. Es ist ein bisschen so, als würde man in ein anderes Reich eintauchen, ein Reich voller heidnischer Rituale und Fabelwesen.

Für diejenigen, die eine Vorliebe für Musik mit einem Hauch von Magie haben, könnte dieses Album interessant sein. Die Musik bietet Gelegenheit zur Selbstbetrachtung und beschäftigt sich mit verborgenem Wissen und Geheimnissen. Das Album regt etwas im Hörer an und bricht mit der Norm.

Gerade Fans der Gruppe Current 93 werden hier textlich auf einige Elemente stoßen, die ihnen bekannt vorkommen werden, auch wenn es sich hierbei nicht um wirkliche Cover handelt (vgl. "Ravens Omen" mit "All the Pretty Little Horsies"). Gesanglich ist der Kontrast zu David Tibet aber natürlich ausgesprochen groß. Die Stimme von Amie Beckwith McBride erinnert eher an Andrea Haugen (✝2021), die mit ihrer Gruppe Hagalaz’ Runedance wahrscheinlich auch einen gewissen Einfluss auf Horse Cult hatte.

Unter den Tracks sticht besonders der Song "Devil's Nettle" hervor, der die psychedelische Kraft und Tiefe, die Horse Cult erreichen kann, deutlich zeigt. Auch den Song "Cruel Wind & Rain" möchte ich hier erwähnen. In diesem Stück singt Amie Beckwith McBride auf eine ruhigere Art und Weise, die eine doomige Stimmung erzeugt, welche von Flöten-Instrumentals unterbrochen wird, bis sich am Ende noch einmal eien schnellere Gangart angelegt wird.

Die Band aus Portland hat mit "Day Dreams & Night Mares" im Jahr 2016 ihr bisher einziges Album veröffentlicht. Ob es die Band überhaupt noch gibt, weiß ich selber nicht einmal, dennoch halt ich dieses Album für so beachtenswert, dass ich es euch nicht vorenthalten wollte.

Horse Cult's album "Day Dreams & Night Mares" is an interesting take on the neofolk genre, stretching over 13 tracks, some of which are very different. The use of female harmony vocals and traditional folk instruments creates a mystical and folkloric atmosphere on the album. It's a bit like diving into another realm, a realm full of pagan rituals and mythical creatures.

For those who have a taste for music with a touch of magic, this album might be interesting. The music provides an opportunity for introspection and deals with hidden knowledge and secrets. The album stimulates something in the listener and breaks with the norm.

Especially fans of the group Current 93 will come across some elements here lyrically that will sound familiar, even though these are not actual covers (compare "Ravens Omen" with "All the Pretty Little Horsies"). Vocally, however, the contrast with David Tibet is, of course, markedly great. The voice of Amie Beckwith McBride is more reminiscent of Andrea Haugen (✝2021), who probably also had some influence on Horse Cult with her group Hagalaz' Runedance.

Among the tracks, the song "Devil's Nettle" stands out especially, clearly showing the psychedelic power and depth that Horse Cult can achieve. I would also like to mention the song "Cruel Wind & Rain" here. In this track Amie Beckwith McBride sings in a quieter way, creating a doomy mood that is interrupted by flute instrumentals until the end, when a faster pace is once again applied.

The Portland band released "Day Dreams & Night Mares" in 2016, their only album to date. Whether the band still exists, I myself do not even know, but I think this album is so noteworthy that I did not want to withhold it from you.
