In 2020, I published a paper in the European Neurology journal that was about converting Brainwaves into music.

I utilized some techniques for denoising of EEG signals during sleep. After that, Wavelet decomposition was used for separation of frequency bands.

As both musical notes and decomposed levels of brainwaves obey a binary system, I decided to map them based on an agreement.

So that brainwaves are converted into musical notes and suitable to feed into a pre-trained Recurrent Neural Network.

The neural network was trained on some pieces from the Tanbour's repertoire. So that brainwaves we converted into music by considering cultural artifacts.

The same method was repeated, for a dataset of Spanish Romantic guitar pieces from Francisco Tarrega.

The final result indicated that the method is valid for the separation of sleep stages, during deep sleep or rapid-eye movement stage.

According to the animation below, the higher brain activity results in music with higher tempo, and vice versa.

This sonification technique can be employed in neurofeedback or biofeedback tasks. Since cultural artifacts influence the degree of joy derived from auditory experiences, tailoring the audio modality to align with the local musical preferences of any given culture can enhance outcomes.
