I met James Blake's music several years ago, because by some chance I stumbled upon his work and being something strange, different and original, it was easy for me to empathize with his style.

James Blake is a British singer and producer, who has also been a fundamental part of productions by Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean and Rosalia.

He does not have a purely commercial sound, in fact I would say he is experimental but his sound in terms of mixing has the level of commercial songs.

Besides the fact that he has a very good voice with sweet textures being a deep voice, he plays a lot combining the ballad with electronic music sounds, consolidating an innovative sound.

In his songs he seeks to express tenderness, I would not dare to say that it is R&B although it has its traces because I think he does not manage to escape towards the sexy sound that comes close to artists like D'Angelo. He stays in his universe, even when he collaborates with artists like SZA, you feel much more the essence of Blake.

Today I want to share three songs that I think are wonderful.

Humingbird

Although this song is a collaboration with MetroBoomin, known for his Trap music tracks, I think it has nothing to do with urban sounds beyond the beat. In fact on google it says this song is Hip-Hop/Rap and R&B/Soul, which I think is far from the truth.

There is no denying the virtue in James Blake's voice, it makes you think of Soul, but when it comes to listening to the finished product as a concept, for me it is impossible to associate it with Soul.

It is a song that speaks of the hummingbird as a symbol of hope, Blake never raps, he builds melodies, varies with dissonance, plays with dynamics in his voice.

Every time I talk about a song I like to insist on the backing vocals, a resource that I think is phenomenal when it has a good use in the songs. This song doesn't have that much, but the little backing vocals that are there seem to me to be enough in combination with the beat samples.

Life Is Not The Same

This song broke my soul when I heard it. I don't usually connect with the lyrics when I listen to a song but rather how it sounds and the feeling in the British musician's voice is out of this world, I haven't heard something with this strength in another song.

The lyrics of the song are about loss and estrangement, it speaks for the common feeling that anyone can have but with an intense and poetic force, which makes this song magical.

Mile High

Something I want to say about the essence of James Blake is that, in collaborations with other artists, where most of them are urban, he usually comes in with his voice, working as if the song completely changes genre.

It is very common that before his part in several productions, there is a ritual or beat changes, as if preparing the entrance for James. In this one the opposite happens, he suddenly enters the bridge, sharing it with Travis Scott's voice, but the power of participation feels so intense that once again it seems that he gives a twist to the whole song. And this stops the song from seeming like just another Trap song.

James Blake is a great artist, it amazes me that he has the ability to bring with his purity and some simple verse and melodies can give another sense with great impact to the songs.

Conocí la música de James Blake hace varios años, porque al dedicarme a la producción musical por alguna casualidad me topé con su trabajo y al ser algo extraño, diferente y original, se me hizo fácil empatizar con su estilo.

James Blake es un cantante y productor británico, quien también ha sido parte fundamental de producciones de Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean y Rosalía.

El no tiene un sonido netamente comercial, de hecho diría que es experimental pero su sonido en cuanto a mixing tiene el nivel de canciones comerciales.

Además de que tiene una voz muy buena y con texturas dulces siendo una voz grave, juega mucho combinando la balada con sonidos de la música electrónica, consolidando un sonido innovador.

En sus canciones busca expresar la ternura, no me atrevería a decir que es R&B aunque tenga sus vestigios porque creo que no logra escapar hacia el sonido sexy que se acerca a artistas como D'Angelo. Él se mantiene en su universo, incluso cuando colabora con artistas como SZA, se siente mucho mas la esencia de Blake.

Hoy quiero compartir tres canciones que me parecen maravillosas.

Humingbird

Aunque esta canción una colaboración con MetroBoomin, conocido por sus tracks de Trap music, creo que no tiene nada que ver con sonidos urbanos más allá del beat. De hecho en google dice que esta canción es Hip-Hop/Rap y R&B/Soul, lo cual creo que está muy lejos de la realidad.

No se puede negar la virtud en la voz de James Blake, te hace pensar en Soul, pero a la hora de escuchar el producto terminado como un concepto, para mí es imposible de asociar al Soul.

Es una canción que habla del colibrí como símbolo de esperanza, Blake nunca rapea, va construyendo melodías, varía con disonancias, juega con dinámicas en su voz.

Cada vez que hablo de una canción me gusta insistir en las backing vocals, un recurso que me parece fenomenal cuando tiene un buen uso en las canciones. Esta canció no lo tiene mucho, pero el pequeño backing vocals que hay me parece suficiente en combinación con los samples del beat.

Life Is Not The Same

Esta canción me rompió el alma cuando la escuché. No suelo conectar con la letra cuando escucho una canción sino mas bien como suena y el sentimiento que hay en la voz del músico británico es de otro mundo, no he escuchado algo con esta fuerza en otra canción.

Los lyrics de la canción tratan de la pérdida y el distanciamiento, habla por el común del sentimiento que puede tener cualquier persona pero con una fuerza intensa y poética, lo cual hace que esta canción sea mágica.

Mile High

Algo que quiero decir sobre la esencia de James Blake es que, en colaboraciones con otros artistas, donde la mayoría son urbanos, él suele entrar con su voz, funcionando como si la canción cambiara por completo de género.

Es muy común que antes de su parte en varias producciones, haya un ritual o cambios de beat, como si prepararan la entrada para James. En esta sucede lo contrario, entra repentinamente en el puente, compartiéndolo con la voz de Travis Scott, pero la potencia de participación se siente tan intensa que una vez más parece que él le da un giro a toda la canción. Y esto hace que la canción deje de parecer otra canción de Trap más.

James Blake es un gran artista, me sorprende que tenga la capacidad de aportar con su pureza y algún verso sencillo y melodías pueda darle otro sentido con gran impacto a las canciones.
