Some songs don’t just play in your ears — they take residence in your spirit. Out of My Belly by Theophilus Sunday is that kind of song for me. It’s not background music. It’s an altar call every time it comes on.

I first heard it at 2 AM on a night I couldn’t sleep. My head was full, but my heart felt empty. Then that chant started: “Out of my belly shall flow rivers of living water…” Something broke. It wasn’t loud or dramatic. It was like a dam cracking inside me. Suddenly I wasn’t just listening to words from John 7:38, I was remembering who I am. Theophilus doesn’t sing that song — he births it. You can hear the groaning, the hunger, the desperate cry for more of God. And every time I join in, it pulls that same hunger out of me.

The part that wrecks me most is the repetition. Out of my belly… out of my belly… It’s not poetic. It’s prophetic. It’s a reminder that I’m not supposed to be a dry well. I’m not meant to live off Sunday leftovers. There’s supposed to be a river — living, moving, healing — flowing from within me. When life leaves me feeling like a desert, this song tells my spirit, “Check again. The River hasn’t dried up.”

@openmic is more than a stage. It’s a family of people who show up raw, real, and reverent. Every week we bring our voices, our guitars, our brokenness, and our praise, and lay it all out. No performance pressure. Just presence.

I want to do Out of My Belly there because this community understands groaning. You all know what it means to worship when it’s not convenient. You know what it means to minister from a place of hunger, not hype. I don’t want to sing this song to sound good. I want to pour. I want my cover to be a moment where we collectively say, “Lord, let the rivers flow again.”
