Staring at the sun

golden sunset Jan 2.jpg

I had some time in the afternoon the other day and had a very ambitious plan to go shoot the sunset. And shoot everything that is there until the camera batteries die.

After days of rain, it was nice to see the blue sky, even though I do like rainy days too. A little break is always good, though.
I normally do not shoot sunsets on completely cloudless days. They are just too boring, and they all look almost the same. A big golden ball that is hiding behind the horizon, and the empty sky gets darker and darker. The clouds always add some drama and tend to reflect nicely in the water.

That day everything was covered in gold, and a place that is more empty in winter times got filled with people walking dogs, cycling, jogging, or just enjoying the warmth of the fireball.

I am not used to shooting city sunsets. I started with Nikkor 18-55, but I couldn't get the results I was aiming for. Quick switch to Tamron 70-300 and it all got better. I could shoot some humans without actually disturbing them. And that lens got the gold hues so nicely too :)

I had to catch some of the little fishing boats parked on the shallow water too.
As I mentioned, the reflections in the water were the best that day. Some days, it looks like someone spilled liquid copper in it. But on those days, I don't have my camera or phone with me to document it.
I guess we can't have it all, right? :p

Few more minutes...

That flare there looks like a little whale...
...swimming towards the setting sun.

It's a sign, obviously!
The markets are gonna crash! 😮

🤣

The photos are beautiful, the tones you captured are similar to those we observed in the dunes, gold of various shades, only here you have captured them in the water. Beautiful riverbank. The song matches perfectly. Greetings @ewkaw

How great that the rain finally gave way to a bright sun, and you could leave the house to photograph the sunset, dear friend @ewkaw
It's good that you filled an extra lens, and were able to change to improve the results of your shots. I love watching people enjoy the sunset
Beautiful shots, I appreciate you sharing these results with us.

Hey, that song at the end would have been perfect at the beginning for a musical background while reading and watching your pictures 😅 Wow you were lucky that day with the sunset, the colors are wonderful, I love how the gold stands out so much, even over the sea, like that obvious whale swimming towards the sun 🤣 I hope it's a good omen and not what you say here hahahahaha... Hey!, yes you were prepared, I'm glad you got your other camera and got better results 😉

I am absolutely 100 % with you on not wanting to photograph those 'boring sunsets', however, sometimes you just can't help it. And you made it work beautifully!

Hooray, for that working-horse lens, the 70-200 used to be my absolute go-to when I still had my D800, probably used it 85 % of the time. Of course, it depends on what you're shooting.

I don't have my camera or phone with me

Are you kidding me?! I get that you don't always lug a DSLR around but you leave the house without your phone? Which century are you living in? - LOL- kidding, of course, but - very, very unusual these days.

It was the time I could go so I went. No matter what sunset it would be, I would just shoot it :P
I wish there were some clouds though for some extra drama.

I should use this lens more often. It is a nice one, but when I have to pick one, I always go for the macro.

you leave the house without your phone?

Hahaha most of the times, yea :D

With a sunset like this I go crazy! I love to see a sky in shades of orange, yellow and reddish... Normally in my country there are always clouds for this time of the afternoon. How nice it feels to breathe fresh air and to be so close to the splendid nature with its sun rays, the sea and a WoW camera that allows you to capture so many beauties!

Oh the clouds can make it even better, unless they just cover everything. They can create some really nice shapes :)

Nice job with that Tamron! I have the same personal issue with taking photos of people, but with that Tamron, nobody would notice... 😃
You got great golden colors, sun rays, and flares!!! Everything that I like is covered! Even a whale that has predicted the crash!!! Darn! It did happen after you published the post...
