Saludos apreciados lectores hoy doy vida y amor a mi blog con una anécdota musical relacionada para mi, a una nueva forma de percutir la vida con un instrumento ancestral llamado Shekeré.
Greetings, dear readers! Today I’m breathing life and love into my blog with a musical anecdote that, for me, is connected to a new way of experiencing life through an ancient instrument called the shekere.
Por alguna razón en los últimos tiempos he tenido la necesidad de incursionar en la ejecución e interpretación de otros instrumentos musicales, llamándome la atención la percusión menor que resulta un gran acompañante y que en conjunto con otros instrumentos se crean armonías esplendidas.
For some reason, lately I’ve felt the urge to try my hand at playing and performing on other musical instruments. I’ve been particularly drawn to small percussion instruments, which make excellent accompaniments and, when combined with other instruments, create splendid harmonies.
Hace unos meses recibí la invitación para asistir a un taller express de “Shekeré”, en el "Parque Cultural Tiuna Fuerte" espacio ubicado en la Parroquia el Valle al sur de la ciudad de Caracas, un lugar muy pintoresco con un estilo bastante fresco, moderno, cómodo y urbano. Lo que más llamó mi atención de este lugar fueron las instalaciones erguidas con caminerías de hierro en formas de puentes, los cuales tienen contendores bien acondicionados que son, camerinos, oficinas y salones donde se dictan actividades culturales.
A few months ago, I received an invitation to attend a “Shekeré” crash course at the “Tiuna Fuerte Cultural Park,” a venue located in the El Valle neighborhood in southern Caracas—a very picturesque spot with a fresh, modern, comfortable, and urban vibe. What caught my attention most about this place were the structures with iron walkways shaped like bridges, which house well-equipped spaces serving as dressing rooms, offices, and halls where cultural activities are held.
También cuenta con estacionamiento, un anfiteatro donde se llevan a cabo conciertos, lugares para comer y baños para los usuarios del parque. Realmente me resultó agradable visitar este lugar del que bien me habían hablado en algún momento, teniendo siempre en mente ir a visitarlo, hasta este momento donde gratamente vi que cualquier persona pueda asistir a distraerse y a recibir talleres como: yoga, acrobacias, danzas urbanas y caribeñas, artes circense, percusión y más
It also features parking, an amphitheater where concerts are held, places to eat, and restrooms for park visitors. I really enjoyed visiting this place, which I’d heard so much about and had always wanted to visit—until now, when I was pleasantly surprised to see that anyone can come to relax and participate in workshops such as yoga, acrobatics, urban and Caribbean dance, circus arts, percussion, and more.
A este magnifico lugar acudí con dos inquietas, graciosas y afectivas amigas contemporáneas quienes apartamos un tiempito considerando también nuestras finanzas para asistir y acercarnos a la teoría y práctica de este particular instrumentos de origen africano.
I visited this magnificent place with two lively, funny, and affectionate friends my age; we set aside a little time—while also keeping our budgets in mind—to attend and learn about the theory and practice of this unique instrument of African origin.
El profe es un hombre de larga trayectoria musical, conocido dentro de la urbe caraqueña por su versatilidad en el toque de instrumentos de percusión y su trabajo como artesano.
The teacher has a long career in music and is well known in Caracas for his versatility as a percussionist and his work as a craftsman.
Con su exposición gratamente aprendí y reconocí el origen la nobleza y versatilidad del Shekeré, instrumento natural de África, que pertenece a la familia de los instrumentos ideófonos, con forma de calabaza también llamado "camaza", que en término nativo lleva por nombre Agbé, y que en nuestro país es muy parecida a la conocida tapara, ese fruto con el que hacemos maracas y vasijas proviniendo de un arbusto. He aquí una de las tantas herencias de nuestros pueblos originarios que nos permite reconocernos e identificarnos, en este caso con la música y sus instrumentos.
Through his presentation, I was delighted to learn about and appreciate the origins, nobility, and versatility of the shekeré, a natural African instrument belonging to the family of idiophones. It is shaped like a gourd—also known as a “camaza”—and is called “Agbé” in the local language; in our country, it closely resembles the well-known tapara, that fruit from which we make maracas and vessels, originating from a shrub. Here is one of the many legacies of our indigenous peoples that allows us to recognize and identify ourselves, in this case through music and its instruments.
Esta calabaza para ser convertida en un instrumento musical, pasa por un proceso de limpieza y secado, su estructura externa suele ser circular u ovalada, tan fuerte como una pieza de barro cocido pero también frágil y sensible, describiendo esto lo femenino del instrumento al igual que las semillas internas que suelen ser muy fértiles al ser disgregadas o colocadas en la tierra. Este fruto también posee una protuberancia particular que brota naturalmente por algunos de sus lados, desarrollándose con diferentes formas alargadas, a lo que se le ha atribuido la representación del falo masculino.
Before this gourd can be turned into a musical instrument, it undergoes a cleaning and drying process. Its outer structure is typically circular or oval, as sturdy as a piece of fired clay yet also fragile and delicate, reflecting the instrument’s feminine qualities—much like its seeds, which are highly fertile when scattered or planted in the ground. This fruit also has a distinctive protrusion that naturally sprouts from some of its sides, developing into various elongated shapes, which has been interpreted as representing the male phallus.
Entonces por esta particular característica se comenta que posee las polaridades de los rasgos masculinos y femeninos en un mismo cuerpo, cuya integración lo hace muy versátil tanto por su estructura como en su ejecución.
Because of this unique characteristic, it is said to embody both masculine and feminine traits within a single form, and this integration makes it highly versatile in both its structure and its execution.
Una de las cosas que me pareció también muy interesante, son los vestidos de las camazas, las cuales puede ser de semillas artificiales u orgánicas que según el profesor estas llevan una preparación especial para ser tejidas en una gran red o malla que le da una sonoridad especial, casi como diez maracas juntas. De allí el sentido de pertenencia del ejecutante quien al obtener su camaza la puede vestir como desee, teniendo así el instrumento un mayor valor y sentido de pertenencia.
One of the things I also found very interesting was the fabric used for the camazas, which can be made from artificial or organic seeds. According to the professor, these seeds undergo a special treatment so they can be woven into a large net or mesh that gives them a unique sound, almost like ten maracas played together. Hence the performer’s sense of ownership: upon receiving their camaza, they can dress it as they wish, thereby giving the instrument greater value and a deeper sense of belonging.
Este instrumento por su origen es utilizado para actividades afro-religiosas, pero también por su versatilidad y especial sonido ha sido tomado en cuenta por músicos y diversas agrupaciones para meditación, relajación y realizar actividades lúdicas dancísticas que enriquecen el trabajo espiritual y corporal.
Due to its origins, this instrument is used in Afro-religious practices; however, because of its versatility and unique sound, it has also been adopted by musicians and various groups for meditation, relaxation, and playful dance activities that enrich both spiritual and physical well-being.
Con mi acercamiento al Shekeré durante 4 horas, me sentí satisfecha por toda la información suministrada, a pesar de ser muy poco tiempo tuve la dicha de conocer un nuevo instrumento que requiere mucha práctica ya que por su versatilidad tiene varias formas de ser percutido para sacarle sonidos, considerándose siempre un tiempo rítmico adecuado en lo que se desea emplear
After spending four hours learning about the shekere, I was very satisfied with all the information I received. Although it was a very short time, I had the pleasure of discovering a new instrument that requires a lot of practice; due to its versatility, there are various ways to strike it to produce different sounds, always keeping in mind the appropriate rhythmic tempo for the intended use.
