Un poco sobre la Cantoría - Esp/Eng

La Cantoría José Antonio Anzoátegui es el coro donde hago vida hace ya más de un año, camino que ha estado lleno de mucho aprendizaje.

Hoy vengo a contarles un poco sobre algunas de las cosas que hemos venido haciendo. Algo que me gusta de formar parte de este coro es la visión integral que se tiene del cantante. Se ha entendido que no se trata solo de cantar; también se presta mucha atención al vestuario y a la expresión corporal.

Sobre este último punto les comento que realizamos un taller de expresión corporal para ir trabajando esta faceta tan importante en todo cantante.

Pienso que cuando se trata de un coro, es sumamente necesario no dejar de lado el velar porque todos los integrantes tengan una buena expresión corporal, ya que, como las piezas pueden demandar tanta concentración, debido a la polifonía, puede olvidarse la expresión corporal. Yo estoy consciente de eso y por eso siempre estoy pendiente de que mi rostro transmita mi canto.

The José Antonio Anzoátegui Choir is where I have been singing for over a year now, a journey that has been full of learning.

Today I want to tell you a little about some of the things we have been doing. Something I like about being part of this choir is the comprehensive view it takes of singers. It understands that it is not just about singing; it also pays a lot of attention to costumes and body language.

On this last point, I would like to mention that we held a workshop on body language to work on this aspect, which is so important for all singers.

I believe that when it comes to a choir, it is extremely important to ensure that all members have good body language, since the pieces can demand so much concentration due to the polyphony that body language can be forgotten. I am aware of this, and that is why I always make sure that my face conveys my singing.

En un coro generalmente no se tienen grandes coreografías, a menos que de un concurso se trate, pero en líneas generales se debe mantener un paso base para ciertas canciones, y no se imaginan lo difícil que ha sido ajustar este paso.

El taller de expresión corporal trabajó especialmente este punto de la coreografía base. La amable facilitadora, bailarina profesional, nos guio al respecto y estuvimos ensayando por más de una hora. Aún falta trabajo por hacer y lograr un mejor engranaje en cuanto a la coreografía y expresión corporal; ya dimos un gran paso.

Por otra parte, ya empezamos los ensayos y estrenamos este año con una pieza nueva que lleva por nombre Cántico de celebración de Leo Brouwer. Una de las integrantes le pidió al director que le hablara un poco más sobre lo que dice esta pieza, a lo que él respondió que es un llamado a cantar para nosotros mismos, pues pasamos la vida cantando para otros y que también es importante celebrar el cantar para nosotros mismos.

In a choir, there is generally no elaborate choreography, unless it is a competition, but in general, a basic step must be maintained for certain songs, and you cannot imagine how difficult it has been to adjust this step.

The body expression workshop focused specifically on this aspect of the basic choreography. The friendly facilitator, a professional dancer, guided us through it, and we rehearsed for over an hour. There is still work to be done to achieve better coordination in terms of choreography and body expression, but we have already taken a big step forward.

On the other hand, we have already started rehearsals and are premiering this year with a new piece called Cántico de celebración (Song of Celebration) by Leo Brouwer. One of the members asked the director to tell her a little more about what this piece is about, to which he replied that it is a call to sing for ourselves, since we spend our lives singing for others and it is also important to celebrate singing for ourselves.

Noté que la pieza tiene un grado de dificultad alta, especialmente porque en algunas partes existen hasta seis voces; ya exige bastante cantar a cuatro voces, asi que imaginen cuánto aumenta la dificultad cuando se suman más voces teniendo acordes hasta de 9 notas. Adicionalmente, la pieza tiene muchas partes llenas de onomatopeya, lo cual añade más dificultad a la interpretación.

En nuestro primer ensayo del 2026 también dimos un repaso al Alma llanera, la cual también requiere de mucha precisión técnica para su ejecución.

Este ensayo fue bastante productivo y en la vocalización recibimos algunos lineamientos para trabajar en la amalgama de las voces; uno de ellos fue que hay que buscar sonoridad propia para cada vocal, focalizarlas, y que a la vez sean homogéneas. ¡Información útil que pondré en práctica!

I noticed that the piece has a high degree of difficulty, especially because in some parts there are up to six voices; singing in four voices is already quite demanding, so imagine how much more difficult it becomes when more voices are added, with chords of up to nine notes. In addition, the piece has many parts full of onomatopoeia, which adds to the difficulty of the performance.

In our first rehearsal of 2026, we also reviewed Alma llanera, which also requires a great deal of technical precision to perform.

This rehearsal was quite productive, and in vocalization we received some guidelines for working on the amalgamation of the voices; one of them was that we must find the right sound for each vowel, focus on them, and at the same time make them homogeneous. Useful information that I will put into practice!
