Semana Santa ya está muy cerca y en la Cantoría José Antonio Anzoátegui tenemos pautadas dos presentaciones en las cuales estaremos compartiendo canciones llenas de exuberante belleza.

Una de ellas es Dies Irae, Réquiem de Michael John Trotta. Pieza en latín que no solo se presenta como un reto en cuanto al idioma, sino también a nivel interpretativo.

Antes yo no tomaba notas en la partitura, no me gustaba, pero nuestro director siempre nos señala que es de mucha utilidad tomar notas en la partitura, colocar las dinámicas e incluso usar colores para ayudarnos a recordar los cambios de la pieza.

Esta técnica me ha ayudado a entender mucho más la dinámica de las piezas, así que ahora, en cada ensayo, mis partituras se van llenando de palabras, símbolos y colores.

Holy Week is just around the corner, and the José Antonio Anzoátegui Choir has two performances scheduled, during which we will be sharing songs brimming with exuberant beauty.

One of them is Dies Irae, a requiem by Michael John Trotta. This piece, sung in Latin, presents a challenge not only in terms of the language but also in terms of interpretation.

I used to not take notes in the score—I didn’t like it—but our conductor always points out that it’s very useful to take notes in the score, mark the dynamics, and even use colors to help us remember the changes in the piece.

This technique has helped me understand the dynamics of the pieces much better, so now, at every rehearsal, my scores fill up with words, symbols, and colors.

Otra hermosa pieza que estaremos interpretando se llama Morning Star, de Arvo Pärt; creada en 2007, es una pieza sacra más moderna. En esta canción se habla de Jesucristo como la estrella de la mañana. Es una canción esperanzadora, con un ritmo apacible; no llega a ser fácil, al menos no la voz de contralto, pues las frases repetidas con diferente melodía siempre se tornan retadoras.

Another beautiful piece we’ll be performing is called Morning Star by Arvo Pärt; composed in 2007, it’s a more modern sacred piece. This song refers to Jesus Christ as the morning star. It’s a hopeful song with a gentle rhythm; it’s not exactly easy, at least not for the contralto part, since the repeated phrases with different melodies always prove challenging.

Otra pieza de nuestro repertorio lleva por nombre Ave verum corpus, un arreglo para coro mixto a capella del español Javi Bustos, una pieza sublime que a mí me suena a agua dulce corriendo por un valle, con esas capas de belleza que entrelazan el canto al alma. Es una de mis favoritas, aunque debo reconocer que cada una tiene una belleza particular que hace que disfrute muchísimo cantarlas.

Another piece in our repertoire is called Ave verum corpus, an a cappella arrangement for mixed choir by the Spanish composer Javi Bustos—a sublime piece that, to me, sounds like fresh water flowing through a valley, with layers of beauty that weave the song into the soul. It’s one of my favorites, though I must admit that each piece has its own unique beauty that I thoroughly enjoy singing them.
