Good Song, Good Lyric...

I love music; but most importantly, I love good music. Now, many will argue that good music is relative, and I completely agree. This is evidenced by the fact that many of my friends consider some of the genres of music I enjoy completely unentertaining. But then, I will not be discussing good music today. I just want to talk about my experience with some songs I have come to love, some of which sometimes stick themselves on my lips so much so that I literally alter them once in every three times I open my mouth to sing.

Over the years, I have fallen in love with so many songs from different genres. For most of these songs, it was the lyrics that first drew my attention. “Shoe Maker”, for instance; I knew I would love the song from the first time I heard it. I have not yet heard the entire song nor understood the message it conveys, but I was already in love with the few words I had heard. But then, I must have been a little biased. The lyrics would have sounded meaningless if they had been accompanied by poor notes. It was not just the lyrics after all; the music sounded really good. Somehow, a funny and nonchalant lyric made sense simply because of how it was sounded. It was that which made me want to listen more — the fact that such nonchalant lyrics could be used to make musical sounds that are so powerful.

For the song "Shoe Maker", I wanted to know more. I felt the sound was too serious for the lyrics it had been given, and I felt there would be more to what the composer was trying to say. I eventually realised that the initial words of the lyrics were a prelude to the main message of the song. But for "Fame", it was entirely different. The message of the song was clear right from the first sentence. It was as if the entire message of the song was summarised in every sentence of the lyric. There was no need to be inquisitive; everything about the song was already known, yet I listened to it over and over again.

Sometimes, it is not just the message it conveys, but also the story it tells. "Everyday" is one song that tells an amazing story. You already know how the story will end from the beginning, yet you still want to hear it all. The chorus already summarises the message of the song, but the story keeps you patiently waiting. The composer gives you a hint of what will become of the characters in his story, but it is still so captivating that you want to hear it all.

Everyday for the their by Cobhams, Sound Sultan and Bez

When I spoke of songs that stick themselves on my lips, I was particularly talking about "Older". I do not really know why, but I just find myself singing this song all of the time. It is also a song with amazing lyrics, but I do not think it has the most amazing lyrics I have heard. Yet, it somehow stuck itself in my head. For months now, I have been singing the lyrics of this song at least once in every three songs that I sing. I do not really know why, but I just have not been able to help it all this while...
