my vinyl lp collection

Time it was,
and what a time it was,
it was
A time of innocence,
A time of confidences
Long ago, it must be,
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories;
They're all that's left you

Bookends Simon and Garfunkel 1968

throughout the years i have moved around a lot and have several times left my small collection of vinyl lp's and even a few singles behind with friends and family etc. they are all long gone but back in the 1980's i managed to pick up a few albums here and there, including a couple of second hand purchases and inheritances. so while i have left much of my favorite music from my youth behind, i do have some choice albums with some fantastic music that i can share here

...There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone...

Ripple Grateful Dead 1970

When you've seen beyond yourself then you may find
Peace of mind is waiting there
And the time will come when you see we're all one
And life flows on within you and without you

Within and Without You the Beatles 1967

Guess I've got that old travelin' bone
'Cause this feeling won't leave me alone
But I won't, I won't
Be losin' my way, no, no
Long as I can see the light

Long As I Can See The Light Creedence clearwater Revival 1970

...Pass the tea and sympathy for the good old days are dead
Let's drink a toast to those who best survived the life they've led...

Tea and Sympathy Janis Ian 1975

...Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds...

Redemption Song Bob Marley & the Wailers 1974

then there's Irish folk music

as a young flute-playing adult i became enthralled by irish folk music most of what i have or had is on cassettes but i have a few albums Planxty is one of the all time classics. The Dubliners collection double album is on green vinyl. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were one of the earliest bands to arouse interest in the American folk music circles. this was their first recording for Columbia and included Pete Seeger on banjo and Bruce Langhorne on guitar. i inherited this and the DeDanann album from my aunt who was a professor in Irish literature. Christy Moore went solo after Planxty broke up and is still releasing albums regularly

a couple of amazing bluegrass albums that are guaranteed to get you smiling and a pair of notable irish folk albums. finbar furey is one of the great Uillean Pipes players still active today. in O'Carolan's nearly 300 year old piece Farewell to Music you can clearly hear where Robert Plant got inspiration for Stairway to Heaven

I used to perform some of these Scottish dances, here played by Alasdair Downie and band, as well as some of the great songs from the Black Family Singers. Mary Black moved on from traditional music and has released many solo albums but her traditional work shines best

i honestly don't remember where i picked up this Woody Guthrie album. it's okay but not his best. On the other hand, Sandy Denny is great in this album, especially the title song: The North Star Grassman and the Ravens. what a voice!

i couldn't resist this Beach Boys hits album when i found it at a second- hand shop. some classics from a bygone era here. the mellow William Akerman album was a gift from an old friend. the only memory i have from her, but a good one. i guess i'll close by repeating the post intro:

Time it was,
and what a time it was,
it was
A time of innocence,
A time of confidences
Long ago, it must be,
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories;
They're all that's left you
