Today's song is mirroring my thoughts of this weekend.

I've been playing this song for a very long time, I haven't played it for a while, actually last time I played it was in South Africa, it was a song I played with bands live, and even did a version here at the time (2018); I never really paid too much attention of the lyrics, but today more than ever this song seems fitting.

It's a song from Gnarls Barkley, called Crazy, the lyrics are just very well written and have a deep meaning:

Does that make me crazy

I was trying to find a quote about madness that I've been looking for a long time and once again, Mr.Spock had the answer:

"I just knew too much" speaks to me, we live in a world where we are supposed not to pay attention to what is going on, stay in a constant state of bliss, don't ask questions!
The truth, or at least a version of it, can be very overwhelming, and push a lot of people to insanity, it can make you losing touch with other people, it can be a lonely road, and it doesn't seem to get better with time.
It's quite the opposite, as you will start losing patience with many lost ones, oblivious to other's ulterior motives.

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you
Who do you think you are
Ha ha ha, bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Again, a reference to the bliss when you are just "having the time of your life", when you decide to make decisions that will affect your life in the short term; you might be able to go on a holiday, the restaurant, go see the game, have a beautiful life for a short period of time, but what did you just give away in the long run?
I think that's how people give up their rights, we give them an illusion of choice, and they "really thing they're in control" of their lives, whereas all the problems, reactions, solutions, were already decided for them in advance.

And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

Now it's rare to have a 3rd verse as important as the first one, in many cases, the song writing quality dwindles the further we progress in a song, this isn't the case for Crazy.

This verse is about your mission on earth. How far are you ready to go to defend what matters to you? Would you give your life for it? Who are the real heroes of this world?
We thought we would never have to ask ourselves these types of question, but in all honesty, maybe that's what it means to be a man or a woman today.

If you're reading this in the future, as a case study for what happened around the year 2021, this is what happened, we started thinking a lot about you guys, and what we are about to give you. I hope it's not all fucked up! I also hope that a place like Hive made a difference, as we managed to band together and form a strong community.

Great song. I've always liked it. I never stopped to consider the lyrics though. They are really powerful and meaningful. I like your break down and interpretation of them. I never realized that song lyrics tend to dwindle as they go but I supposed that makes sense in a way. I'm sure people start to zone out as they listen to a song on the radio. It's a bit different then writing where you would want to start strong and end strong and put your weakest arguments in the middle.

Anyway, great version. I like that you slowed it down a bit, the pace and the....tone?(not sure what word I'm looking for here) - really fit the lyrics. Nice work!

Well after reading the lyrics again, I now think that the middle one is also weaker than the 2 others, like what you said about writings. I think it's particularly true for a philosophical argumentation, which is what the song is, as it ask a question, about who is really insane.

Nicely spotted, I slowed it down but also took it 4 keys lower than usual, which is something I never did before, just in the heap of the moment.

So when you said tone, you mean the key, but maybe it's your inner Quebecois that spoke, because "key" is 'tonalité" in French.

A key lower = Une tonalité plus basse.

I'm actually not Quebecois though, I'm Ontarian. I'm not cool enough to be from Quebec. I don't know how much you know about Canada but Quebec is like the cool and sexy province of Canada and Ontario is the stuffy uptight suit. If Quebec was a person it would be the younger brother who is a successful artist/dancer/singer...etc something cool. Ontario would be like the older brother, an accountant or banker who wears a tie to family christmas and talks about his stock portfolio. He is a bit of a duchebag who thinks really highly of himself but the rest of the family secretly hates him....

Hahaha that was good! It sounded like the Weasley family in Harry Potter, but if you don't know what I am talking about , we can also take myself as an example, as I am the last one 😁 and my older brother is...Well, I wouldn't say boring, but just very different, my sister too.

as far as your message... I'm just shaking my head here. thinking all these things with you.

You know that - hahahah cuz of our conversations lately! hehe but my dad told me something once and I didn't get it at the time, but I kinda do now.

He said "when it comes to your door, be ready."

And I think that can be taken two different ways.

  1. Don't worry about it until it comes to your door. (which I think he was PARTIALLY saying) I don't think he was saying ignore it when its NOT at your door. But I think he was saying - you can have a general concern for the world and stand up for what you know is right - BUT you can't LIVE your life outside of your own home forever. Daily things still need to happen for your family. The simple things - having your kids grow up with a sense of stability, eating meals together, experiencing life together.... these things are important and we can't sacrifice the ones that we've been blessed with for the world. The world is here for them. They aren't here for the world. So we need to preserve and protect those blessings WHILE SHOWING THEM how to also take time out of that day to live in a way that honors and respects those around us. but all in proportion. Family first. Because if you don't care for your family, no one else will. Also if everyone DID take care of their family - this world would look so much different. So lead family, and then lead family to love others too.
  1. Being ready takes time and diligence. When it comes to your door - you better ALREADY be ready. hahaha You can't start worrying about preparations the moment you heard someone knocking down the door. hahahaha So that kinda ties in to what we were talking about too. Always learning, always being aware, always adjusting... and letting your kids see that too! But in the most protective way possible, right? Cuz we don't want our kids to grow up in this heightened state of anxiety. But we do want them to have a good sense of what's going on. And I thikn that happens with daily talks - asking them what they think about things you share. Asking how they would act. Bringing it down to their level. Asking how THEY think you should be prepared... just inviting them into the conversation but at a child's level that grows with them until you're havin discussions with full grown, well-balanced, educated, aware adults that you've raised to have a global understanding.

I think you're doing all the right things. Just dont let it overwhelm you, because that's when fear wins.

Can you stop being so profound and on point? It must be tiring to have an argument and you're always right 😄

A lot of what you said about family, is word for word what my dear wife says, she also knows that I sometimes lack the water, and put too much fire on everything (sorry to bring bad memories haha), by using this metaphor I mean that I am in the action, and she is much better adjusted than I am and tend to think, and then act. 😁

Finding the balance between being ready and living, is right now probably my biggest task at hand, especially I have the ability to drag everyone into my madness 🙂 (I shouldn't be smiling about it), and by this I mean that I am very expressive, and sometimes explicit, I don't shelter my kids, but don't worry, I get reminded constantly that as you said, they are children, they need to enjoy life.

You seem to have done a pretty good job, though we show what we want online, I think it's hard to pretend to be great when you're shitty hahaha, so I am 100% sure that you guys are good people, and your kids seem brilliant.

but there are other ways to fight. not always with fire. Water is powerful too :)

and when you combine fire and water??? you get steam. and steam will power things beyond our imagination! right?

you are brilliant. I'm not just flattering you. I can see in your writing and your singing and your passionate way of raising your children - you are brilliant. and you have a wife that is a good balance for you and brings cool water to your fire.

when things threaten to overwhelm, breathe. look at your kids. you already know this - i know you do!
