Rhyme and Reason: The art of learning song lyrics

avatar

I have been a lover of music from a very young age, but I had one deficiency- learning the lyrics. The admiration I had for those who could sing lyrics was huge, and I wondered how it was possible for them to sing along as if they were the writers of the song. But then, it made me believe learning the lyrics was possible, all it probably needed was dedication and the willingness to learn.

Music is most effective when it speaks to you, this I realized when I started learning the art of learning song lyrics. You can effectively and easily learn the lyrics of a song that speaks more meaning to you than one that is sung generally with no personal meaning. The first song lyrics I learned were about heartbreak. My proposal was turned down when I heard a certain heartbreak song by the Backstreet boys. It didn't take me long to learn the lyrics and it was at the time I realized learning song lyrics has a connection with our soul and reason. So most songs that mean something to me, I do not find it hard to learn its lyrics. Which means, rhyme and reason, are the easiest way to learn song lyrics.

The roles of rhymes and reason
Rhymes are thoughts expressed in verses or sameness in sound. This thoughts can be captured, and once the musician's thought is captured, the music flows differently. It was what I later understood that the people who I admired do whenever they first desire to learn a lyric. It makes the flow easier and it makes the learning process easy. This is why music that has no personal meaning or a thoughtful verse are hard to mimic, sometimes one pick a certain verse that speaks more to them and hold dearly. Reason sometimes play a role, what are you learning it for? Why did you choose certain song among others? Etc. All these comes in play when learning a song and how easily you grasp it. Let's say, Rhymes and reason are important to successfully learning song lyrics.

How to learn a song lyrics

  1. Have a personal connection with the song you want to learn: A personal connection makes the music flow naturally. You may get a few to several lines wrong at first, but gradually begin to get the lines right as you listen to the music more often. The longer you listen to music, the better you understand the lyrics. I have sung some songs wrongly at one point, then realized I was singing them wrongly when I listened to them over and over again. Our connection matters in the art of learning song lyrics.

  2. Surf for the lyrics: sometimes we can't get it all right, you'll need to check up one or two lines to ensure you're saying the right thing. Write it down and sing along if need be. Not everyone can grasp lyrics from merely listening to the song, some people may still need to check it up and mimic it along. When the song is complex, I check it and try to follow along.

In conclusion
To learn lyrics, the most important thing to put in mind is the thoughts in the verses and reason. This can make the art of learning the lyrics easier.
